    NEW YORK (CNNMoney)
U.S. automaker Chrysler will become fully owned by Italy's Fiat under terms of an agreement announced Wednesday that also involves the United Auto Workers union.

The agreement comes more than 4-1/2 years after the Obama administration brought Fiat in to keep Chrysler in business as part of a packaged bankruptcy proceeding.

In a statement, Fiat said it has agreed to pay $3.65 billion for the 41.46% of Chrysler it doesn't already own from the UAW's medical benefits trust for retirees.

Fiat shares gained nearly 13% in Milan early Thursday to trade at €6.70, their highest level since July 2011.
In addition to the deal, Chrysler will contribute $700 million to the benefits trust over a 4-year period. For its part, the UAW has agreed to support the automaker's plans to roll out vehicles and will drop a Delaware court proceeding over options exercised by Fiat in the acquisition of Chrysler.

Hope they don't get screwed like the Daimler deal seemed to be in the past. Why can't Chrysler get managed by people who love cars? They have some of the best looking cars on the road, but every decade or so they seem to stumble into bankruptcy or close to it. I miss my old Coronet, and the 'good ol' days' seem gone. Now we get the 500 Abarth. Yay. Fiat. Fix it again, Tony.

I think Fiat may be the best thing that has happened to them.
I think my Ram 4X4 with Cummings diesel is the best truck their is. Its 7 years old now and still going strong.

Dodge hit a home run with the Cummins Diesel pkg when it came out. (early 90s??) They sold way more than expected the first while. I remember the first 4.7 Dakota I drove, wow, what a sound and snap off the line! Had a D150 shortbox 2wd 360 Auto I miss, and many, many others. When Chrysler merged with Daimler, I felt sick. When Chrysler hit the bankruptcy skids, I felt worse. Now, I don't know what to think. Been a Ford man the last 5 years, and been well served, but Dodges always have the look and the sound for me. A Fiat 4 cylinder direct injected VVt equipped eco machine likely won't make me give up the old Crown.

I just hope Fiat does not try to make real big changes and make it to Euro looking.

I agree, might be a good thing for them. Sure better than taxpayers throwing more money at an automaker to keep them afloat.

We have 2 Dodge's in the driveway, my 05 Ram 1500 Quad Cab and my wife's 2012 Durango. Neither have had any problems and my 05 Ram has NEVER been back to a dealer for any work. Other than tires brakes and maintenance I've no complaints. My wife's previous car was a 2008 Chevy SS Trailblazer. Beautiful and power for days, but that thing was always in the shop for one thing or another (20+ visits). She traded it in the moment the warranty was up.

Smart move on the Trailblazer - it'll only get worse. Concerning Chrysler, I agree it's far better than a government bailout, but still hate to see it happen . . .

Pretty much staged the way they wanted, Fiat gets a USA dealer network, and buying Chrysler was the fastest way to do it, Unions get cash to replenish pension and HC funds so they won't crash and burn and lay it back on us to cover bad Mgt and Union contract decisions.

Wonder how much we lost on that deal, $10Billion lost on GM....

I wonder if signage will change at your local Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep dealer? Some Italian design flair coupled with Hemi muscle might be cool. A retro Detomaso Pantera styled car with an SRT Hemi? That would be a nice ice breaker for the U.S. market. We don't have to like it, but we can make the best of it.

Heres a bit more info on the deal...

Fiat paid $6.3 billion for Mopar, including the initial stock
purchase with all the buy outs/pay offs to the union.

Mopar had $12 billion in cash, do the math....

they got Mopar for free... Nice job zippy...

I do think its very sad that the once great American auto companies have lost so much. Sure we can blame them for poor management but it's also the unions fault. Another big factor is how stupid can our government be for not protecting its own manufatures from foreign importation and the dumping of cheap imports from years ago and not making the overseas automakers with their cheap labor compete fairly with our auto companies. Sure now their autos for the most part are priced competively but they have been allowed to gain that foot hold here at the cost of our own manufatures. We still allow any foreign auto manufatures to load our country with their products. We really are stupid for allowing this to have happened. I knew years ago that all these Americans buying the cheaper autos were hurting the US auto makers but people simply don't care. I really think that most people in this country don't have any pride left for their own country.
