ok here goes, battery is good 12.5 volts was load tested too, start switch button is good, starter relay is new, solenoid is new, starter was tested and works. did all the electrical test that the manual says to do. The problem is that the wire from the starter relay to the small connection on the solenoid reads 12.5 volts when NOT connected to solenoid, when connected it reads 10.7 volts, what the hell is going on? the bike is a 1984 flht early evo, it has the small solid state relay. should I switch to the old style relay like on my shovelhead? Any ideas, I have checked continuity on all wires, I am at a dead end as to what the problem is. I can run a hot wire from battery to starter it works, same thing with jumping across solenoid,:wtf:HELP

if it arcs when you try to connect to the solonoid, it is shorted.....if not then you have a bad ground, and not getting a good reading/connection. is there a ground cable to the starter???? should have one........let us know!

Had a 95 do the same thing turned out to be a loose ground. The main ground from the Bat. should go directly to one of your starter mounting bolts.

Early evo has a grnd strap under the trans thats connected to the primary mount bolt and to the frame these get loose broken or some times over looked. make sure that the connection is clean and tight with star washers between the strap and the frame and trans.

what the other fellas said and the 2.5-3 volt drop is normal voltage drop on a 12volt system
