clutch grabs

Hi youall, new to the site, sure glad i found it. I have an 81 lowrider and the clutch grabs or wonts to inch forward while at a stop with clutch depressed. I have adjusted the clutch and controls several times. It seems to work for about 5 miles or until the clutch warms up. This is also causing shifting problems. I'm thinking the clutch is worn out, any suggestions. Thanks for your help. :

if all adj. are correct pull the clutch plates out & check them make sure you check the steel plates to see if they are warped lay them on a piece of glass

sounds like u have warped steel discs replacethem there not to pricey

Clutch Spring Plates

If you do find one of these center plates in your clutch I would replace it with an ordinary steel plate. It's not a pretty picture when you pull out the clutch basket and can't remove the steels and friction plates due to the spring plate failure and all of the small rivets are lodged in between the plates. Had to throw away the whole thing and start over. I know that Direct Parts sells the rebuild kit with all steel plates.

I have not been into this clutch yet, few other irons in the fire at the moment, plan to get to it soon. Thanks for the info about the center disc with the springs. I do know this is an aftermarket clutch with six pressure plate adjusting springs. I will take your advice and change to all steel disc if that is the case. Will let you all know. thanks again.

Thanks for the info Hotroadking. I pulled the clutch apart and 3 of the 4 steel disc are warped and show signs of very uneven ware. The friction plates apear to be in good shape. one thing has me puzzled, there were 6 friction plates, 2 were stacked together in the inside of the clutch hub. My manual showes only 5 with the steel plates between. Has any one did this before or heard of it?

I talked to the gentleman I got the bike from and he said it was an aftermarket clutch and that it shouldn,t be grabing. But from the looks of the steel disc, they were not replaced when the new friction plates were installed. There is too much ware on the steels as if the friction plates had worn into the steels, and very little ware on the friction plates. Went to the local HD dealer for parts, didn,t have them , to order would take a week to ten days that is if they are still made. So i went to a bike shop here and ordered aftermarket parts will be in Monday. My question is, is there a need to put the Sixth friction plate in? I ordered new steels and friction plates. I know nothing about the Barnett performance clutch, any info?
