. . . Are taking forever to get here. Bike has been down 2 weeks now waiting for the friction discs and a Nylatron hub liner. Should be here this week, I hope. Also waiting for a special order Timkin bearing to arrive at the machine shop so they can press it in the bearing support. Here's a pic of the machined basket and other related pieces.

Clutch plates from Tattoo. I don't know where he gets them from. Hub liner from J&P. Machine shop must have ordered the bearing from the moon . . . .

I'm hoping that when I reassemble the tranny this time, it will be RIGHT!

Yikes! Well. Tattoo is going to pick my clutch plates up on Friday. The hub liner should be here tomorrow - won't have to deal with stagecoach bandits or Geronimo! Ha!

Here I go again, boys. Yesterday after having gotten all the parts I start work on the clutch. Got the hub on with the new nylatron liner. Then I put the basket on with the new retainer and discover two things: I can only get one snap ring in the correct depth hole. I put another one on anyway and end up with too much play in the hub. Then I realize I forgot to put the belt on. DUH! I try taking the snap rings off but I end up breaking my nice shiny new snap ring pliers. The first ring came off and is unusable. I go to Lowes for more and they are too lightweight and thin to use in the hub. Have to order new ones from J&P. Then I see that I probably have the wrong retainer for my hub. It's made for a 3 stud hub and mine is a 5 stud. Look around online and can't find anyone who makes a retainer for a 5 stud hub. GRRRRRRR!!!

Stuck in Hobgood with the broke bike blues.

Sorry to hear your problems man.... have you figured out where to get the correct retainer?

Got up this morning and went out to the shop and set up a drill press jig and drilled out all ten holes in the retainer until they were all the same depth as the "A" holes. Not that they were acting like "A" holes! Then I put the clutch back together using the 2 snap rings I had left. I read on the shovel forum that they used only 2 of the snap rings on their retainers. So, the basket is a few thousands looser than it's supposed to be, but I think it will be okay. The clutch disengages perfectly.:D

I'm going to ride the bike as soon as the rain lets up, maybe tomorrow. If there's too much movement in the basket, I'll find or make some thin spacer washers to put under the snap rings. In the meantime, I'm going to search around and try to find some extra snap rings. I'm guessing maybe our local HD dealership will have them. They are 3/8", but are thicker than the hardware store variety.

I also put on a different clutch pressure plate (see pic of the shiny aluminum one). This is the one that originally came with the open belt primary.

Test ride maybe today, though the weatherman is calling for rain today and the next several days. We're getting the effects of Alberto.

Yesterday I ordered a custom made solo saddlebag from the Leatherworks in California. It had to be slightly downsized to fit my frame. Should be here in 3 weeks or less they say (in time for my trip).

Well, boys, I guess I beat you to getting back on the road first. I went for a 50 mile shakedown cruise yesterday and the clutch worked fine. Just had to back off the stud nuts a little for the right pressure (I like to use just enough pressure for the clutch to grab but not slip). I don't notice any difference in the performance of the clutch. It MIGHT be slightly smoother. It worked pretty good before I changed things. Tranny clunks sometimes when changing gears, especially in and out of 3rd, or downshifting in the lower gears, but it did that before, and I've been told that is normal for the older 4 speeds. I think it will be okay like it is, as I don't crash thru the gears like a speed racer wannabe.:D

So far, the new tranny mainshaft oil seal isn't leaking. Hooray! And there doesn't appear to be any oil leaking from the spacer, either.

I guess all I gotta do now is build up my riding chops for the Ohio trip. Good luck, boys - hope you're riding soon!

Are you using the Early style throw out bearing?
My bike had the wafer style and it has disintegrated, so did the push rod, and finger.

that throw out bearing gets destroyed because the clutch adjustment preload is
set wrong, too much tension, and it's a tiny little sucker just designed
to take a light load for a short time.

What I do to adjust the clutch is: slacken the clutch cable, loosen the nut then back out the clutch adjuster bolt, move the tranny arm all the way forward then tighten up the adjuster bolt until the arm moves all the way back then I loosen up the adjuster bolt a little bit, maybe half a turn, then I lock the bolt down with the nut. Finally tighten up the clutch cable so there's about 1/16" gat between the lever and the perch.
    Is that correct?
