Clutch Sprocket Spacer

I Have A 76 Xlh Electric And After Replacing Starter Drive I Noticed A Need For A Spacer Behind Clutch Sprocket ? The Sprocket Was Shearing Against The Bolt Head With The Small Hole Through It Not A Kicker Is There Any Suggestions?

have you checked the bearings? the trans and the clutch hud either one may be gone bad.good luck ,dran

bearings,plates,hub and mainshaft are like new after i put starter drive in,and assembled everything back, i noticed slight play movement on the clutch sprocket. looking in the clymer,i see a gear, spacer and spring behind it but that pertains to earlier kicker.it seems to be about a 15/16 gap if you don;t need that plate that is riveted to the back of the sprocket.

since i,m not sure of a proper spacer for the backside of the sprocket, would it be a good idea to install a kicker unit in the bike? looking in j&p i see a kit with pedal, shaft, rachet, spacer and spring. this is a 76 and should be compatible? :witsend:

i bought the bike needing a starterdrive,so no it wasnt running when i bought it. as soon as i put the starterdrive in, it fired right up. this of course was after i put the clutch all back together by the book. i adjusted the clutch to specs,started it, kicked it in first let off and realized iwas getting no clutch play. thats when i opened it up and seen that the sprocket chain wasnt quite lined up with the comp sprocket,making me think i needed a spacer behind the clutch sprocket so that i could get the proper clutch play i needed.

i think your right hot road king because what i said earlier was that i noticed the bolt behind the clutch sprocket that has the small hole through it was worn down some from where the sprocket was in too far . there was no parts left over when i was finished.

i,ll give that a shot! i enjoy working on this bike. it,s my first harley and although i was hoping to straighten it out sooner so i could get some ride time in this summer, i,d like to say thanks for the input and i,ll get back to ya as soon as i grab that manual. :cheers:

well, the manual is telling me good news and bad news along with a mechanic at a local harley shop. the mechanic is telling me there was a spacer behind the clutch sprocket but is now obsolite!(i think i spelled that right). in other words i need another resource to locate this rare part or have one made somewhere. like i said before, its a 76 xlh electric start with everything new but i think the previous owner might have left the spacer out when he reassembled the clutch unit.:uke:

good news! good news! i found the spacer that i needed. i called j&p for their vintage and restoration catalog and looking at their kicker layout,it showed two spacers. one was for the kicker itself and one was by itself for just the 75 and 76 electric start. they are slightly different lengths., so i,m glad i didn,t buy the kicker unit just for the spacer that came with that! this took time, for one finding what went behind the clutch sprocket and two making sure it was the exact part i needed. i hope this can help anybody else out there scratching their head out there. i might be bald now but so what, i can change my helmet size because i,m riding this spring coming! thanks guys and lets ride!!!!:cheers: :rocket_bike:
