Could be a fuse or possibly a loose or dirty connection at possibly the battery terminals (start there). Could also be corrosion on the ground to frame. I'm not familiar with Sportsters but I guess there must be fuses under there probably under a plastic cover under the seat.
One of the other guys, maybe Jonnybiker can help further.

The starter takes a lot more power then then lights do , I would make sure batt cables are clean , then go from there

done that already, really seemed like something popped since headlight and indicator lights all went dead the instant I touched the starter button.

If no apparent corrosion on wire terminals then probably either a bad or loose ground, or a dead battery (or mostly dead).

Lights can still work but battery too weak to turn over the motor.

Take the battery out. Load test it. Then take a wire brush and clean the terminals and clean the cable connections, and possible corrosion in the cable itself, clean with the wire brush and check where the bolt holds it to the frame .
Starters on old Sporty's went bad a lot.

Then tell us what you found.

When you charge yer battery, don't use a car charger.

If you don't have a load tester, you can take it to a auto parts and have them load test the batter.

You can take a multi meter.
Check the voltage and while yer holding the meter leads on it have somebody to turn the key on and hit the starter button and see how low the battery voltage drops.
Make dang sure the negative wire going from the battery to the frame is clean and tight .

After all that look at yer starter connections........

    Good Luck Redneck..........

Set it to Volts setting. negative to negative, positive to positive. Like
CB said, have things lined up, have someone hit the key and see what it reads. If you can get it started, check the battery as it is running. Should be at 12.5-13 volts idling then creep to about 14 when rolling on it

Just checked out the batt, terminals clean and tight, reads 12.78 on the voltmeter, when I turn on the ignition it drops to 12.75, but when I hit start button there is no change.
