I was out riding last night and she just died on me (nothing like pushing a 600lb bike for five miles to put a smile on your face)
No response at the start switch no click at the starter.
I have lights and all the rest of the system seems to work and there is a full charge showing on the gage.
I thought it might be the starter relay, but I found when I removed the coil that my front spark plug wire was worn through the rubber and there was a deep crease at the cap atatched to the coil,so I know that has to be replaced but what I need to know is if the coil would stop the whole thing or did it just short out?
Also if this would just stop the whole show...you know relay, coil, and anything else?

DW, did you get with, or do you have the manual for your bike? Sometimes you might find an answer there. (Sorry this is not my specialty) But, I would guess that if the coil shorted out then that would kill your spark, not your power to the starter. There has to be something else......no coil, no spark. Have you checked anything else? I would suspect that your starter should still turn the bike over, even if the coil was bad. If you can, start tracing power from the switch to the starter. Make sure you still have power to the switch, then start following it from there. Maybe you fried a wire that is in the starting system? Sorry I'm not much help. I'm sure that someone will post back with better advice, but while you're waiting, start checking the obvious. Good luck!

Does your bike have some fuses or fuse panel? If so probably popped a main power fuse when it shorted.

DW both Voodoo and reeseess are right. The first thing is get a shop manual along with a parts catalog. And you most likley poped a breaker. There is nothing more frustrating that pushing your ride for any distance especially for 6 miles. your in luck I just happen to live in sac. Give me a shout, maybe I can help you out.

I remember a dummy that one time accidentaly bumped the kill switch and didn't realize it and had the same problem as you. He rides a real nice o6 FXDI 3500 and his name is Tom you know anyone else do something that dumb let me know will you. Even worse he is a mechanic by trade can you believe that? Tom

    wiring

i have an 06 with only 12,000 mis. on him. so far i've had two wires brake. seems that when they crimp a terminal end they over do it, causing it to break and fail. think harley needs to watch them kids in the sweat shops better ; they're getting a little to strong or something
