Our fearless leaders in DC are acting to enforce a ban on NHTSA lobbying of the states to enact helmet laws - they will be introducting a resolution on May 2 to continue current restrictions on NHTSA that prevent the agency from lobbying state and local goverment from enacting helmet laws.
This is a damm good example of wasting our tax dollars. The push now is to use the federal money to educate and use safety programs. Basically crash prevention and rider education. It's a step in the right direction but I think it should also go toward teaching cagers to be aware of motorcyles on the road.
Kudos should go to Rep. Tom Petri(R-WI) who recently co-sponsored legislation to prohibit grants from NHTSA to states for use use as motorcycle "safety"checkpoints. a US house resolution 904 if passed would barr funds to states which be used for roadblocks.
A court ruling is expected in NY on the consitutionally of the NY checkpoints and should help all orgs who are against this missuse of our tax money.
If we as a whole contact our lawmakers at state and federal levels and let them know what we want - then maybe NHTSA will get the message and start working for us instead of against us.
It only takes a minute to drop a e-mail on our lawmakers and it might do a lot of good. If they don't listen or are voting for special interst groups then the answer to that will show up at the next election when they get thrown out on their ears.
