cork or rubber

    Hi Forum, Would some know when Harley went from cork to rubber gaskets in the EVO Motors? I have a 1989 FXST w/ rubber rocker cover gaskets. The HD dealer in town says that this year should have cork. I don't beleive this engine has ever been tore down. Should I replace w/ cork or rubber? Is there a great difference? thanks, Bernie

    an old wise man once said.."if it aint broke, dont fix it". if the gaskets are not leaking, dont worry about them.

    Yes,I agree with you "if it ain't broke don't fix it" but the base gaskets are leaking.

    If doing base gaskets you might also ckeck studs and use the Hayden Enterprise leak fix gaskets, contact CD at Direct Parts for all the parts and info. Dutch

    do leak fix gaskets come in topend gasket sets? are these the steel base gaskets?

    We have tried about every combination of gaskets on the EVO's. Paper, Silicone paper, Metal rings, coated metal etc. Not one sealed a particularly stubborn bike. The Hayden Oil Fix had just came out so we decided to try it.

    If you lap the base of the cylinders, use the Hayden kit with paper gaskets and Honda Bond which used in Accra's as gaskets in some areas I will bet you'll seal it up for good. The key is to have a flat surface to mate to and alignment of the return hole from the cylinder to the cases. Make sure you check for pulled cylinder studs and follow the torque procedures! I used Basely studs just to be safe.

    With the exception of the change to the head breathers the rocker covers are the same for all EVO's and will accept any flavor gaskets. I prefer rubber and use Honda Bond on stubborn ones.

    When using a product like Honda Bond, let the product cure for 24 hours if possible. You can assemble it all but, don't start it up until it is cured. In the article, I say that Honda Bond is the same as Yama-bond but have since learned that while it is Hylomar, it does not creep like Yama-bond will
