Cruise control fails to engage

Hello all, I'm kind of new here so forgive me if there is a thread on here that I missed. I have an 06 Ultra classic that I'm very pleased with, but I'm having a problem with the Cruise control. When I flip the switch for it the red light turns on, but I can't get it to engage and hold the speed. The light never turns green. Anyone have an idea or had this problem?
BTW it was working just fine the day before I use it all the time and hate riding long distances with out it. ugh :witsend:

Check and see if your brake light is stuck on. That would make the cruise disengage. Also, check the throttle sensor on the right side of the frame under the tank up by the neck. It has two wires going into it at a 90 degree angle. Make sure they are plugged in.

reach down on inside of rite fork,,,you can feel the cable with connecter from throttle,,,,it has two small wires going in top,,,look at this setup BEFORE you ride ,,than while under way flip cruise on ,,red light ,,reach down and move this connecter ,,wires and all ,,wiggle,,than hit button on throttle side,,green lite should come on,,,you can sometimes pull rubber back from wires going in and spray with whatever,,,, sometimes even have to take them apart and back again,,,they just plug in,,, the linkage will look like it comes apart,it doesnt,,, pops

I got home last night and after looking at the bike I noticed that the break light was staying on. If I pushed forward on the hand break lever the light would flicker and if I pressed hard enough the light would go out. So I took the throttle apart. Once apart I could easily press the switch where the lever should be pressing and it would cut the light off. I tried to adjust and move it around so the break lever would make better contact, but to avail. I'm pretty sure that's my problem. Actually the cruse is the symptom of the problem of the lever not being able to press the switch enough so the cruise can turn on. I don’t see any damage to the lever, as if it’s worn out or miss-shaped, the only thing I can think of is the switch is worn out and not sticking out at far as it once did, and there for it’s not being pressed in as far by the lever.

Well, I have come to find out that there is a little plastic knob that under the boot of that break switch. It is broke and that's why the lever can't press the switch in far enough in. Had to buy a new switch soldered two wires back together and break light problem fixed. $60 bucks for a little piece of plastic. Really that’s what the switch cost, but it’s a little piece of plastic that caused all that headache. Thanks for all the feed back. Ride safe…

OK, I'm still having a problem with the cruse though. I was riding around last night, turned it on and it was working fine, after a short ride I noticed I was slowing down, I wasn't on a hill either. So I grabbed the throttle and reset it to the speed I wanted. It started slowing down again and wouldn't hold the speed. I got to where I was going and figured I look at it in the morning.

On my way home it was back to where it wouldn't engage again. Light on but fails to turn green and hold speed.

Now this morning I pulled the bike bike out to wash it, after I was done I was getting ready to turn it on when I noticed the cruse light blinked green 3 times then went out??? I have not clue what's going on with this thing, Anyone seen this before?

Ok, I'm done. This bike is trying to make a full of me. I ran the diags as per the manual, and it gave me codes that's not in my book. So I rode it over to my local bike shop, not a stealership. On my way I tested the cruse, it worked fine, to perfection!?!?!?

I talked to them anyway they said to come back in a hour and they would run a full diag on it see what codes they can get from it. Really the only thing I can think of is it's having a problem with rain, because it was rainy and wet out all night.

I hope this isn't a fair weather bike! ok, that was a joke.

I just got my bike home from the dealer today. My Cruise was acting up also. At the start of a ride my cruise would hold for a few minutes then disengage. After fiddling with it, it would finally start working and work just fine for the rest of the trip. then months later the check engine light came on The dealer said that the code that came up had to do with the cruise control. They replaced the switch that sets the cruise but told me that they were pretty sure it was just a bad connection somewhere in the circuit. Working great so far.

have you tried recalibrating it?

No I have not. I'm not even sure how to do that, but like I said it's working fine now. The only thing I can think of is it hates getting wet. There has to be something that gets wet and causes it to freak out! It's been dry here last two days and it's worked like a champ.

to recalibrate:

1. make sure it's up to temperature
2. start with the bike off
3. on the right bar, push and hold the cruise button to resume
4. switch the cruise on
5. still holding the right button on resume, start the bike. the indicator light will go green for about three seconds, then will go out. when it goes, release the right button, then push and hold it to resume again, until you hear the bike idle up, then settle back down.

All done!
