OK, I have 2 assignments that are due this week. One in my Computer Class, and the other in my Global Citizenship class. We are dealing with topics this week that I think that everyone here would rather enjoy. So I am going to share them. Here We Go.

In my computer class, our subject for discussion is whether or not you or I think that camera surveillance is a viable crime deterrent and whether or not the government should be using this means of observation???

Now in my Global Citizenship class, we are discussing whether or not people are good at being culturally responsive??? We are to provide examples of situations to where we think there was good and bad cultural responsiveness.

    What do you say????

Not to be a party pooper but Global Citizenship, is this a requirement for entrance into ACORN or the Obama Administration...LOL

The Camera deal is interesting, JMO I don't see how a camera will completely deter crime in that it presumes the criminal is 1) aware that there is a camera, 2) that cameras can see through ski masks, hats with large brims, sweatshirt hoods pulled down. 3) that the camera will be operable in the vicinity of an area where a crime is committed.

Further I have a hard time with "government intervention" into our private lives, this isn't mother russia, and while it would be considered "conspiracy theorist talk" who's to say what else will be done with the cameras, why do they "need" to protect me when no crime is being committed.

Put a camera up at the park, and lets say on this corner there has never been a crime reported (not that one wasn't committed at some point) why would we want "big brother" watching us "just in case"

There are stores that are robbed all the time, signs are clearly visable, "Camera recording this facility", stores have people stealing merchandise all the time, they have cameras up to record it, but it won't stop it.

It might stop some kid that was thinking about picking up a lolliepop and walking out to see if he could, maybe.

I don't see where the right to privacy and freedom is outweighed by the governments desire to monitor activity....

Global Citizenship is a required course that I have to take in order to get my degree. Basically, it is a class to teach cultural tolerance and a maybe acceptance. It does certainly sound like that it is training for Obamaites, and I agree, but, what do you do when you want your degree?

Food for thought?? There are many stand points that one can argue, but really, what is the difference between a casino watching you on a camera vs. the government? Surveillance is surveillance no matter how you justify or rationalize its use. Why then are people not in an uproar over something like that???

Big difference it’s their casino and it’s our country
and we already have stop light camera’s here. So it's already happening a little at a time.
    Ever read the book 1984??

I have not read the book 1984. What is the book about?? To your point about the casino, so you are OK of being video taped under the same premise of crime prevention, which is the governments position of which they are justifying using surveillance. Sounds likes the same thing. Isn't it???

My point is that the casino’s are privately owned, and I don’t have to go into them.
The government is supposed to be by the people for the people. Isn’t just the pretence of the government to prevent crime when in reality they want to spy on the general population?
As stated earlier surveillance doesn’t stop crime.

Read the book and see if you can’t see some similarities in what was written in 1948 and what is happening in 2010. Besides it is a good read.

I was just making fun of the Global Citizenship class, understand that universities teach this to you, hopefully you'll question the theorum that we need to be global citizens, I would think this would be an electorate not a requirement, but in today's social media driven world it's not unexpected,

    Per Video surveillance:

The casino as stated is private property has the right to maintain security on the premises. The owners have the right to film all activity on the property to monitor client activity, employee practices to protect the assets of the company from monetary theft either from stealing chips, to counting cards, or simply falling and claiming falsely that you slipped.

Why do they have this right?

Because the casino being private property, and as long as they comply with the laws to give you notice if required that your actions will be monitored, and by entering you give them permission.

YOU are making the choice to be monitored.

In a governmental setting, external to any private property, you are being filmed or monitored for every action without giving permission, other than the government assuming that by walking on a sidewalk they have the right to watch you.

If you are doing nothing wrong, why should they have the ability to tape and record your actions, knowing your whereabouts, when, what, why, if no criminal act is being committed then JMO they have no right to view my activities.

    Think of it this way,

Should the government be allowed to hire a police officer assign that officer specifically to you and no other person. This would be done in order to monitor you throughout your day, work, home, dinner, driving, riding your bike, even to monitor in your bedroom. All this under the guise of security.

They will tell you this is being done to assure that you are never hurt or assaulted because you "could" be assaulted at anytime as people have been attacked in those situations... However it could also be used to issue fines and penalties in the event you break a law, jay walk, speed, use an aerosol can in an unsafe manner, or have a sexual act that is outlawed in your jurisdiction, where does safety monitoring end and mandating compliance begin...

It is unfortunate but no this a required class. All of this for only 1 credit too!! Some are arguing that one should not worry about being video taped unless they are doing something illegal. Is this valid??? I am not too sure that I completely disagree with this. If the true purpose of surveillance is for crime prevention, isn't that a good thing??? In that context, it really isn't any different than private business video taping its patrons. Is it??

It is funny that you mention the police officer analogy because in my text they give a similar analogy. In my text, they gave the situation if video taping is the same thing as a police officer being placed at every street corner. How many of us have complained that there is never a police officer around when you need one??? This way, we have that in a sense??? So why with video is there a problem????

Its still unwarranted surveillance and an invasion of privacy
the side effect of trolling for potential problems is that of
reducing your ability to move freely and privately without
    fear of observation.

I'll counter your compatriots argument that unless you are doing something
illegal why worry, with, Unless you know I am going to do something illegal
or suspect that I have planned something illegal why are you worried that I need to be monitored "just in case"

I believe presumption of innocence is still in effect.

Well, I would have to agree that our legal system preaches innocent until proven guilty, but in reality it is guilty until proven innocent. So under that premise, is surveillance not then justified????

Violates my 1st amendment rights - so to be fair shouldn't we start putting cameras where we can watch those who want to watch us? just to make sure they are doing what their supposed to be doing! ie: Big O's office and the back hallways of congress where the special interest groups hang out with our congressmen and women.:roflmao:
