cv carb on 1963 FLH. Main jet is 170. Came down from 50 to 48 on the pilot (adj screw turned CW until eng stumbles, then backed out until eng smoothes out, then another 1/8 of a turn. Problem is when encountering a good grade in third gear w/rpm's up so I'm not lugging it and after going a good distance, eng starts running badly, backfiring thru the carb. Also, on level ground @ 30-35mph, occasionily it backfires thru the carb. What do you think. Could I possibly have too small of a main jet causing the problem-but I know the main jet is not supposed to affect the performance until after 3/4 or higher throttle Any help would be greatly appreciated

63 would be panhead, or does it have a shovel topend???? i would like to see pics of the intake/carb setup. as for the backfiring..main is ok, how are the seals??? make sure ya dont have an intake leak either at the heads or carb.....it may need a 45 on the lowside...and i would turn the mix screw back in 1/8 or a bit more....it should be half way between stumbles...or aprox 2 to 2 1/2 turns out from light seat. let us know!!

A 63 should also have points , are you set up right & how old are they?the heat can start to mess with older point's /timming as well
