Cylinders and pistons

883 converstion kit just arrived, and i need some help on cylinders & pistons. On the cylinders is there a front and rear? The pistons have me throwed to. The wiseco's look exactly the same, can't tell intake from exhaust.Are the valve pockets the same on these.??????

The intake valve pocket should be a little larger than the exhaust. I copied this from Manufacturer of High Performance Forged Pistons & Performance Parts for Motorcycles, ATVs, Snowmobiles, Marine, and Automobiles - Wiseco Piston Inc.

Piston Installation
2.) The ARROW on top of a Wiseco piston should point toward the
exhaust side of the cylinder after installation. Piston to cylinder fit is
critical. Follow advised clearances given above for best results.
Always use new gaskets and torque cylinder head to manufacturer's
specifications. In some instances, cylinder heads may have to be
re-torqued after break-in to insure proper head gasket seal.

Are the barrels HD or aftermarket?? Something tells me there should be a "F" and "R" on the jugs, I'll check tonite on that.

There should be instruction sheets with the jugs and pistons, but you can get install instructions for the pistons on the wiseco website, what I copied was from the Buel XB9 piston install sheet.

As has been recommended, get the H-D factory service manual & I'd do it before I did anything else - it is that much better. Then call Wiseco & ask for the instructions that were supposed to come with the pistons. I don't use theirs so I can't say how to tell front from rear but there should be some type of marking, although it shouldn't make any difference as long as they're facing the right direction. From the info I have, the valve pocket depth is the same intake/exhaust, but I don't know the shape of the "reverse dome" area on those particular pistons

Thanks guys for the quick responses. I called about the cylinders and pistons.The cylinders can go ether way.Reading the instructions on the wiseco's theres no mention of front back,so i called.Both are the same just point the arrows forward.(now i'm off to get correct manual)
I guess i'm just used to working on the shovels,evo's are definitely a different machine.I gotta lot to learn.WE THANK YOU AGAIN.

Yep, Evos are different (need that darn manual) and good friend who has a couple Ironheads & a Shovel likes to remind us Evo owners that we ride "beer cans" :roflmao:
