About the damn deer...Not much to tell...We were just slow crusing on a back road after a long ride and Bambi just came out of nowhere...Glad I got into the habbit of covering my front break all the time...It happened so fast...Got a little too much rear brake which was not fun either...LOL...I think I drove 25 mph the rest of the way home...Then I had a few beers...

Marc, I have a buddy who rides an '09 FLHTCU who hit a deer (350 lb doe) square on at 55 mph and didn't even drop the bike.

The deer was killed and the front end of the bike destroyed, but amazingly he didn't get a scratch. He said he instictively ducked down low to the gas tank and just held the handlebars straight and was able to keep it upright until stopped.

He was wearing a 3/4 helmet and heavy leather jacket, gloves, and boots that softened the impact, and sez he will never ride without those items. He said he had to wash off blood and guts, but at least it wasn't his. Still rides this bike after repairs and swears this heavy machine saved his life. Here's one reason why heavier is definitely better.

Yeah...I agree except for the heaver leather jacket...It was damn near 85 and no way in hell will I wear a jacket...I hit a deer back in the early 70's on a CB 750...Killed it and did a pretty good job on myself...I carried it for about 20 yards and went down, and slid into a small rock bridge...Helmut saved my life...Bell Star...The valuable lesson I learned was always wear gloves...You can't gradt skin to palms of your hands or the bottom of your feet...The pain was incredible when they scrubbed my hands and starting pulling out bits of sand, gravel and other road crap...The healing process was pretty painful too...But as the old saying goes " it could have been worse".

I had a Bell Star years ago too. Ugly but good protection.

Don't know if anything will save you when sliding into a rock wall. But that leather jacket and gloves will keep your skin on. I know how miserable it is wearing these on hot days, but I just un-zip it partly for ventilation, and carry a water bottle to soak my t-shirt. Feels great for about 1/2 hour. My jacket is over 35 years old, made before they invented flow through ventilation.

I came really close to nailing a deer in my second season of riding with my Sportster. That is why I am going to invest in LED headlights. Way brighter!

I almost always wear the jacket and gloves. Got 3, a heavy leather , light leather and a mesh jacket with armor. Very short around town rides I may skip it. Rather be hot then rashed. Deer skin gloves for summer very comfortable and elk skin for cooler weather.

Better lighting is definitely needed compared to factory o.e.m. You'd think they would include h.i.d. or led as standard equipment just for safety reasons. If they put it on all bikes, it would become a low cost item.

Although I hit the deer (or more accurately, he hit me) in broad daylight at 2 pm.

    Remember "deer whistles"?

I have seen deer near the edge of the road several times. I'm not sure, but I think the loud pipes scared one off - when I got fairly close, it turned and ran back into the woods.

Riders have to be constantly on the lookout for deer around here.
