    Help me man!

This is the very first forum I have ever joined. I am not a motor-head but love to ride with friends with the same interests of destinations.

My main reason for joining is because I need advise from people in the know about specific problems I am having with my 2001 Roadking FLHRC I. It is backfiring on decelleration. So far I have heard from friends, worn valve guides, bad spark plug wires, bad coil. Can you tell me or point me in the right direction.

I have taken it to the local Harley dealership for this problem. They tighened up the exhaust pipes to the motor, did a full service on it and it still backfires on the decell. I am not impressed with them. I am afraid to take it back to them so they can soak me for more money and not fix the problem. :fight:

    What do you guys think?

Usually decel popping is a sign of an exhaust leak or lean condition. You didn't mention if your exhaust is stock or aftermarket, but sometimes different systems can be mismatched or require additional tuning. Some types of open exhausts are notorious for decel popping, and sometimes simply changing baffles will do the trick.

I know you said the dealer already tightened the head pipes, but you might try changing the exhaust manifold gaskets. That's where I would start. Once these gaskets have been crushed (especially if removed and remounted) they are certainly trash. I prefer the Screamin' Eagle gaskets over the stock or James versions as they have always given me a perfect seal.

Start with that, and if you still have the problem come back and you are sure to find some friendly folks willing to help.

both ken & chuck are right on here , does your RK have EFI OR A CARB? & what muffler's are you running ? , & you will have to tighten up the header pipes ever so offten , unless you put a dab of BLUE COLORED LOCKTIGHT ON THE BOLTS , the blue will keep the bolts tight , but will brake loose easy with a wrinch , if you or someone changed the mufflers you will need to adj the carb or have the EFI REMAPED

    Use EVO Exhaust Gaskets -

One more suggestion: Purchase exhaust gaskets for the EVO from HD for your TC. They are square in section instead of triangular so will begin to seal sooner and they will also NOT extrude themselves out into the exhaust port closing down precious exhaust port size as the TC version does. They are the same material as the TC so are a very good alternative...

    Thanks, (first post)

Did you consider Removing the spark pluges bump the motor over untill a cylinder is on top compression stroke the exaust valve will be closed and spray a little soapy water on the exaust connections and hold a air hose on the exaust pipe and look for bubbles. It won't take any pressure.
Then put the other cylinder compression stroke and spray the other cylinder exaust connectoins and look for bubbles. That will find all the leaks. It's free!
    I love free...
