    Hi
I'm new to the world of motorcycles. Have a new softail and girlfriend has a '05 Low rider. Rode when I was younger almost 30 years ago. My life has meaning again! :)
I just bought a maintenance DVD and one thing on it surprised me.
When doing an oil or transmission drain and refill, the guy recommended putting liquid teflon on the drain plug threads.
Like I said I'm new to motorbikes, but, was a mechanic in my previous life for 25 years and never heard of this. Always have relied on the gasket and I replaced the o-rings when I did my service.
Am I asking for a leak if I don't use teflon paste on the drain plug threads?

I've been reading a lot of posts here and am very impressed with the knowledge and experience being passed on.

I put a fresh o-ring on each oil change. The dealer near me uses the teflon paste as extra insurance. I think it's dealers choice.

as navyman mentioned.....a little insurance doesnt hurt when it comes to keeping oil in an engine.........i use it also....the paste type, not the tape on a roll.....and a little goes a long way.....

I've never used teflon paste on the transmission or oil tank drain plugs, never had a problem with leaks. The o-rings pretty much seal them up. I do use teflon paste on the primary drain plug though, it's a pipe thread with no other means of sealing it.

    Thanks for the responses guys!

    This site rocks!

I've already done the oil changes without the teflon. Haven't done the primary chaincase yet and it makes sense to at least use something there if there is no gasket or o-ring.
