Im having problems aligning my drive belt on my 1999 Fatboy. When I spin the tire forward and adjust the belt everything is good but when I spin the tire backwards the belt pulls toward the tranny and rubs on the tire. Even when I adjust to one extreme to the other the same thing happens. Any help would be great.

This is a normal condition the way the belt is manufactured is to track to the outside when roleing forward. follow the service manual for belt specs and you will be fine.

Is it normal for belt to hit on the tire when going backward?

I hope someone that knows more steps in but I don't think a belt should contact the tire at all. are you running an oversized tire?

If you have a 140 tire installed it will hit the tire in reverse.if the rear is not in alignment it will hit the tire sooner. softail rear alignment is a pain. what i use is a long straight edge machinist rule work well. after rolling forward so the belt tracts out place the ruler on the pulley flange and sight along the drive belt the gap should be even along the length . you can try counting threads on the adjusters but be carefull when torquing the axle as they very often slip away from the end of the adjuster.
by the way i am a HD certifed tech with over 35yr exp so i do know of what i speak

    I have a 150 on my Heritage, had a 160 (too wide)

I use a tape measure, hook it over the pivot shaft for the swingarm and measure
to the center of the axle, there is a detent on ends of the axle.

should be able to get it exact on both sides.

It's normal for the belt to walk in and out (reverse vs forward) on the drive pulley.

Thanks for the explanation. I knew about the belt walking out. My comment about someone that knows more was in reference to what I could add and not questioning your input....sorry for the confusion on this
