I am looking to change out the stock header system on my '08 Ultra. My question is has anyone an opinion on duals with a cross over or with out a cross over. I am looking at a couple different brands and they offer them both ways. So what do you all think ?

Steveb I run the V&H true dules & samson fish tails , the true dules are the best think I did for pipes , some say you loose by running them I have not noticed any change in power but did notice a lot of heat out for my under my right cheek

with the crossover you might not lose as much low end as you are still getting some scavenging with the crossover and with the crossover they are trickier to take apart if you are working on the engine for example(another junction to take apart) other than that it is personal preference. Todd

Stock motor it's not going to bump it a ton,

I like the true dual look and loss of heat on your arse

    Samson Calibre
V&H True duals with any muffler
    Rineharts

    They all work

For a stock motor, i'd go v&h and add a set of anyones slip ons, probably supertrapps.

Go with the exhaust you like, all the different tech sites that I visit on the net have always suggested that you loose something with true duals.

Well to post my actual experience, 2005 bagger with a Darkhorse crank 103, running SE cleaned up performance heads, S&S G carb, DTT ignition custom map running Head Quarters 33G cams.

With V&H Pro pipe vs V&H true duals lost 3 hp at 6500 rpm with the duals but gained 7 TQ at 3K. Running the duals with hooker adjustable slipons.

Performance builds will respond differently, but unless you ride your bike on the dyno you are not gonna feel or see it.

I love the duals, sound is excellent & they belong on a bagger.

The best overall performance in the usual usable power range is achieved with 2-1 pipes (run V&H Pro Pipes myself after trying other duals on my 'King). Everything else is either for racing or looks. So go with what you ride for.

True dual with a stock setup you do loose a little but you gain more in getting rid of the heat. I put true duals on my last bike and had it run on the dyno and it lost about 2 HP but gained in torque. I did get rid of that excessive heat under my leg and it seemed like the bike ran cooler. The 2 into 1 will give you the best performance but I still like the true duel look. V&H headers are an excellent choice.

Yep the interesting part of this is you loose HP. The Hp I lost was at the rev limit, how often do we ride there? Tq is what I gained & an amount that you can feel at 2K rpm. It's something I can adjust with my Hooker adjustable slip ons, close em I gain low end Tq plus slightly reduce the volume, open & gain noise but loose a little bottom end Tq. On my big bagger I choose the reduced volume & bottom end, but the nice part is the sound, sweet music to my ears with em open or closed off some...if I want to win the Hp dyno shoot out open em up wide, but me me I prefer to have em pinched off at 25% open on each.

Sound & looks is very subjective, I liked my 2 in 1 but not nearly as much as I do the true duals, but that's just my opinion.

Enjoy & keep the rubber side down,
    Cracker ;)

Rienharts can flow a ton and make a lot of power when properly tuned and the combo setup correctly

You might want to check with all the manuf to be sure what fits. My guess is V&H has true dual headers that fit with the 02 sensors.

BTW a great slip on is Wild Pigs out of Daytona, $200 a pair, three baffles, for your stock motor the small ones should work,

Check with Millers in South Daytona...

I have an 02' Heritage Classic with a carb. Stock is 58 hp and 70 torque at rear wheel. I have the SE breather, Andrews 26G gear driven cams and V&H true duals, (no crossover) with V&H shark tail slipon mufflers. Tuned the carb myself using the old plug chop method. Went one size up on the pilot jet. Took it to school and had it dynoed. A/F mix is at 13.4-13.7 throughout the entire rpm band. Running 67 hp and 85 torque at rear wheel.:D

My 01 Springer that I just picked up has the SE air cleaner and the carb wad re-jetted don't know to what). I don't believe there is any cam work done. The pipes are Sampson fishtails with the cross over and don't believe the Sampson pipes do much for HP gain. Thinking of adding the V&H pipes with their fishtail tips on. Any thoughts?

Those look pretty good and the performance has got to be better than the Sampson fishtails.

Hi Steve, did you pick a set of pipes yet? I too am thinking of swapping out my stock headers for true duals on my Street Glide. My right cheek is getting well done.

I have not picked up a set yet. I finally found the part number for just the header pipes from Rhinehart , so that will end a winter project .

I run Vance Hines header pipes on my FLHT with slip on long Porker straight pipes with steel baffels that use stock mount locations. Sounds so nice. The Vance Hines fit perfect, they also come with rear mount bracket that bolts to starter for support on the back header pipe. Important. The heat shields also perfect fit, good quaility all round. With the other mods, Andrews EV27 Cam, Carb reworked top to bottom, Accel Ignition system, Super single fire coil, plugs, wires, Programable Ignition Module. It runs strong from 2000 to 6000, pulls hard. My FLHT is a 1997 and the stock header split open at y joint on rear exhaust. Oh yea, I run a Arlen Ness preformance Breather also. Have not dyno'ed but seat of the pants easy 20 to 25 hp gain over stock. Wife rides 1998 Dyna Low Rider, I ride solo so wieght is not big issue with Cam I picked. Nothing sweeter than a Big Twin Idling bout 1000 rpm with good duel exhaust system. Or that straight pipe rap about 5500 rpm with true duels. Unless your drag racing for money forget the 2 into one issue. With the duel header pipe setup, you have many choices of slip on mufflers to pick from. Even reuse stock if you want.
