E Glide cone nut

So, am trying to take off the cone nut on an 04 Eglide standard.....have tried (but is too small) the 1 5/16 socket. One HD shop told me 1.5 inch, 2 others have mentioned 36mm....have now also tried 1 7/16....is just a squeek too big....based on my math, am thinking that the 36mm may be right.....as the 1 3/8 is 1.37xx inches, and the 1 7/16 is 1.143xx. THe 36mm is 1.41xxx ..anyone know what is right? service manual does not describe size. Thanks

well, sorry guys.....I have short patience....went and got a 36MM from auto zone for a 1/2 inch breaker bar....my bike is now suspended well above the floor with no back wheel.... TOMORROW, I plan to get new skin hung....also got the new break pads, so will be putting them on also......at least on the back. The dis-assembly went smoothly once I had the right socket.....I am just hoping that the RE-Assemly goes smoothly....that is my larger concern as then I need to make sure the tensions are correct and such...... :drunk:

great job!!! i knew you could do it!! i am going to look tomorrow at the size wrench i use for that nut....and will post it...i am pretty sure it is not mm.

36mm for mine was about as dead on as you can get..... standard MIGHT have worked in the 1 7/16.....but was "sloppy"...and I worried about stripping the head.

I also suspect that the EASY part was the tear down....I still have the HARD PART to go.

the hardest part is putting the axle back through the wheel.....the jack will do the work, but you need to be able to control it very smoothly.....and keep the fingers out of harms way....pinchin em hurts............so i have been told....

antiseize the shaft of the axle first,

adj on the 1 inch axle bikes is straight forward.

Set tension on the floor.

What "cone" are you talking about?

The cone is what they actually name the NUT that attatches to the axle.....I am going by the termanology listed in the Service Manual, secion 2-11.

if ya set the nut on a flat surface, it is cone shaped.....go figure....well i was wrong....36mm socket.........

well, I am HOPING to start working on break pads and re-assembly on Monday....work fri/sat/sun, so will not be RIDING......weather has bee GREAT, although, have heard that this weekend is supposed to be WINDY... could have had this whole project done already if I had just brought it to the shop, but this keeps the adrenaline pumping....... can't wait to see how much adrenaline is pumping when I ride for the first time......HOPING that my wheel and breaks stay on and work!!!

just a tad bit of confidence on your part will go a long way!!!! it wont be long you will be hanging a shingle to fix all the bikes in your area!!!

well, if that be the case, I could think of a worse thing to do with my time after I retire out of the military!!!! Took a look at the belt while I am in there..... had to look 3-4 times...... if THAT ever goes bad, not sure HOW that thing works!!! no master links to help!!!! Looks like a total PIA!!!! Maybe I WON"T hang that shingle!!! Have to see.....first time doing this much work...so still a bit intemidating......

I'll second and third that, changing that belt is no fun at all since you have to rip down the primary. I've busted my belt twice now and nothing sucks more. Even though I'm not running a wide rear end I may still switch over to chain just so I never have to change that damn belt again.
