EFI Tuning

    I just ordered a set of 2 into 1 thunder headers for my 95" 2000 FLHRI, I'm going to have my bike tuned on a dyno at my local shop and they say they have the harley brand race tuner for EFI models and would need to install that to be able to tune it correctly. My question is , is there a major difference between the one at the shop and the Dyno Power Commander ? Or will they both basically do the same job ? I plan on gettin a newer FLHT in a year or so and its a different power commander for anything newer then an 01 EFI ? so I was thinking on just going with the HD tuner on my roadking for the time being and just wanted to make sure it will do the job ? Any help would be much appreciated.

    Race Tuner

    The big glaring difference between Race Tuner and Power Commander is the Race Tuner is good only on the bike that it was originally installed on. The tuner and ECM are married when you install the new program so it is not transferable to your future purchase.

    Thanks for info, Looks like I'll be gettin the race tuner for the time being because of the fact the PC for the 2000 models are different for the 01' and up models, but at least I'll be able to use the thunder headers in the future on the FLHT I plan on getting.

    I'm assuming I'll be able to put my stock exhaust with the SE slip ons back on with the race tuner on the bike when the time comes with out any issues, or will I have to have it re-tuned in again ?

    You have the wrong info.

    There are PCIII USB models for every EFI bike HD has produced except the '96. Yours is a 2001 Bagger so it has a Magnetto Marellie EFI NOT the DELPHI EFI that all Softails and Dyna's and 2002 and later baggers. I am not sure the HRT has an application for the Magnetto Marelli. I'll need to check it out.

    I have a 2000 FLHRI , not an 01' I was told they changed the EFI in 01-02 from what I have ?? I 've seen that PC has a different module for my 00' then any newer model EFI's after 2001 ? That was the reason I was going with th HDRT (that my local shop says they keep in stock) in my bike for now till I get a 05'-06' FLHT in the future, if I were to get the PC for my bike now I would'nt be able to re-use it in my newer one when I get it ??? But PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong on this....Thanks.

    The Magnetto Marelli was used from 1996 until 2001 on all Baggers. The ECM was changed in late 1996 and it was used until 2001. The PC will not work on the early 1996 ECM. The 1997-1997 (and late 1996 with newer ECM) EVO Baggers use the 805-511 model PCIII-USB. In 1999 the TC88 was released on the Baggers and Dyna's (TC88A) ALL 1999-2001 EFI Baggers use the 802-511 PCIII-USB. The Delphi EFI was released in 2001 on the Softail models only. The Delphi has been used from 2002 to present on the Baggers and uses the 807-511 PCIII-USB. The Magnetto Marelli PC cannot be used on Delphi EFI's and vice versa. Note that all PC for the Delphi EFI's are the same base unit and only the base maps differ so you could use a PC off of a Softail on a 2002 and later Bagger or the other way around. Same this applies for the Magnetto Marelli EFI bikes. The PC from a Delphi EFI or a Magnetto Marelli EFI are not interchangeable. I checked on the HRT and was told it was for the Delphi EFI only. So, either way you go you will need a new tuning device when you go to a new bike. :confused: :eek: my head hurts now.

    That was my understanding exactly cd, I think pheww!

    Yes from what Ive heard the HRT is not useable on the MM bikes which would be the 00 EFI bikes as well.

    HRT is for delphi.

    Either way you're buying two units, look into a DFO vs a powercommander, less money and it can add fuel to the MM easily.

    It took me a few times to read through what CD had mention :confused: so Basically what you guys are telling me is I can not use the HDRT on my 2000 FLHRI, which is what my local dealer says they have in stock for my bike ?? And would have to go with a after market module,PC or DFO etc.??

    IMHO a DFO is the better way to go if you can't take it from bike to bike, the least cost alternative to adding fuel. JMO :D

    Since you are planning on going to a newer model that does have the Delphi EFI, I would do what HRK recommends. You can add fuel via a DFO and that will keep you from being too lean. When you go to the newer bike, you have many tuning options then. DFO, PC, HRT, S&S, etc.

    Thanks alot guys for all the help and recommendations and looks like the DFO seems to be the logical choice for me right now.It just amazing me you can make an appointment at the dealer for a test and tune on thier Dyno and them knowing what bike I have and still tell me about the HDRT and its in stock :mad:
    But I guess it is the busy season at the shops right now and they seem to be in a rush on the phone..
    Anyway Thanks again and I'll let you guys know how I make out with the Dyno and new pipes and all.

    Dyno Results

    Well I guess it turned out okay for what I have into it for now ? Tunned in on the dyno at 81HP,93TQ not bad I guess.But I definately feel like I lost a few years just with the sound of the Thunderheader, I've been missing my 96'Ridgid a buddy and I put together with a EVO (ya know Loud Obnoxious Bar Hopper) I recently got rid of about 1-2 yrs ago when I was'nt riding it much, got a little spoiled on the RK I guess...
    Anyway, the HD race tuner does work with either EFI set-up you have (MM or Delph,except the 05'models) it even shows it in the wiring sheet that comes with it, dont understand why HD advertises for 02' and later models though ?

    I decided to hold on to my RK and continue on beefing her up, at least till the wife gets tired of the upgrades(then it'll be the solo ride with a set of Apes and stripped down) thats when I'll have to get another touring bike..After all it is payed for why not dump some cash into it and get it the way I want...

    Any suggestions on my next steps?Heads, cams, gear reduction? Its basically a stage 2 95" with 203cams and the stock heads,SE air breather,New TH exhaust,and HD tuner of course right now.I'd like to get to the 100HP/TQ ?? for now with the existing pistons(rather replace the heads for now?)Is there any HP max restriction that the TH exhaust will handle? I guess theres no need to make any repeated mistakes that some of you guys may have regretted doing in the past?? Any help would be MUCH appreciated.

    I see a few of you guys are out in the AZ area, we have the roadtrip itch starting to creep up on us lately, the wife has always wanted to check out the Canyon , I road around it a few years back with a couple of buddies (guy trip at the time) she's been sqeeking in my ear about it lately, so who knows when the time comes for planning it I post something out there and maybe run into a few members out there somewhere ?

    My Issues Too

    The DFO does not seem to have any data out and about that will allow a "novice" to properly adjust it. I just changed my DFO out for the RT. I have a 2003 King Classic with a Stage II kit with cams.

    After adjusting DFO myself, post Stage II, I ended running so rich my plugs were swimming rather than firing. Dealer said even HD mechs didn't have "proper" tools to adjust. Only way is on a dyno if I remember his words right. So, they installed the HDRT.

    Yesterday, after a 201 strecth, I checked mileage. 33.72 mpg. I guess I am interested in more info about all this EFI and what is proper.

    Also, another concern which may not be related, but I think it might be. I have excess top end blow by. When I over adjusted the DFO, I had massive oil covering my pipes, and in between the lifter blocks on the case. Yesterday, I had some, but very minor. Is this related? My HD service manager told me "all" Harleys do this.

    Hope I am not out of line jumpin' in on this thread. :confused:

    Hey Mcube,
    I'm in the learning process myself with this EFI stuff so all I can tell you is what I 've done, as far as the DFO I have no idea but since I've put the HDRT in a few days ago and had it dyno tuned my bike is definately running alot better since they were able to get the air/fuel ratio dialed in right,my MPG was pretty bad before this and I'm leaving today for a 300mile ride and will see how the MPG works out now since the tunning ?
    As far as your oil all over your pipes and the HDSM says they all do it??(dont sound correct to me) , mine has had no issues since I've had it, a few buddies of mine hade that same type of issue and turned out to be their breather backing plate was wrong from the factory(on thier 01models I believe) and HD has had an upgrade kit for that issue they had to go with, I'm almost sure they had the stock air breather set up on thier bikes though and would imagine you have the SE on yours or another aftermarket set up ? So it may be something worth looking into, along with you running so rich..
    I'm sure a few other members here can help you out alot more then myself with this problem, just keep checking on the updates/replys, there are alot of good knowledgable members here and a real cool forum to check out, so welcome and enjoy.... :D
