I own a 2003 H-D FLSTS. which has 60,000 miles on it. It has recently started to shut down when I'm riding for a long time or its hot outside. it then fires up again after a few seconds with a big back fire. the tach goes dead and the engine light comes on. I first thought it was carb. trouble But If I run out of gas the tach still works. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated thanks! P.S. I have owned this bike since it was new.

i would check the circuit breakers......the reason ya get a big boom is that it quit while running....gas buildup. i used to blow the mufflers off my old chevy doing that.....turn off ign with foot on the floor, then swithching the ign back on!!!!!!!
do you loose all electrical or the engine just dies??

It just dies. then it could be fine for a couple days or continue to cut out every so often.

Could be a crank sensor problem, but I'm not all that smart on 2003's. My 1999 is famous for that problem. Can also be ignition unit. You can try cleaning 'em up and replugging them in - it could be as simple as bad contact.

If heat is the constant factor in failures it is likely a module/sensor going out. They don't always - or even often - fail all at once.

when I was having this problem it was moisture in the switches in the right handle I by passed them and the problem went away it also cured my hard starting problem I made a plunger for the back end of the starter solenoid you can buy them for about 20 bucks but I'm cheap. easy also. with mine the gages would go dead.and the boom when it started back up would scare the crap out of anyone nearby I also changed the crank sensor and the ignition system to no avail thats why I have an extra hi4-tc ignition system
