    Hey Guys,

I need to tap into the Bike Talk Knowledge Base. This weekend I had the bike torn down to install the wires through the bars, chrome switch housings, chrome front master cylinder, chrome brake and clutch levers, new grips, and braided cables (brake, throttle and clutch). When I put everything back together it seems I let a gremlin in.

THE BIKE - 2005 Softail Deluxe w/ Stock ECU, Power Commander, Screamin Eagle Air Filter, and V&H Drag Pipes.

THE PROBLEM - When I turn the ignition on the turn signals and brake light burn continuously. The alarm light (little red key on speedo) comes on for a few seconds, then goes off for a few seconds, and then comes back on and stays on until turning the ignition back off. I hear the fuel priming but the orange engine light on the speedo never comes on. Also, the odometer doesn't come on unless I push the trip button on the side of the dash. On the left switch housing the turn signal switch doesn't have any effect on the continuous burning signal lights and the horn doesn't work....but the high beam switch does. On the right switch housing the turn signal switch also doesn't work but the run and start switches do. The bike starts but the speedometer doesn't work. Also the alarm works fine (i.e. I can arm and disarm with the fob and when I tilt the bike with it armed the turn signals light up).

I took everything back off and checked all the connections and verified I inserted the switch housing wires back into the right holes on the Deutsch Connectors. Everything looked fine.

Does this sound like anything you guys have seen before? Any pointers would be a big help. Thanks in advance for your time.

When you extended the wires did you make sure you got the correct color end on the correct wire?

It sounds like you have the wires in the incorrect position on a few of them.

If the horn is not working try this, see which wire the horn wire is supposed to be, then look and see what connector it's going to. If you have it in the correct position, then get a meter and ground it to the bike then put it on the metal tip of the connector and press the horn see if you get a signal, if not check it on each wire until you find the signal.

It's going to be just a couple of wires that are off on the connectors for the turn signals. If they are on all the time somethings in the wrong postion.

As for the speedo check under the dash and make sure you got the connectors pushed in all the way.

    Problem Fixed

Thanks for the response HRK. It turned out to be a pinched wire in the right switch housing. I guess I didn't use enough butter when I was trying to stuff everything back in. I can't believe that a pinched wire could cause such havoc.
