Engine Breakin?

    What is the best engine break-in method? The one in you owners manual for warrenty reasons? or the break it in like you want it to run method? Phil

    i just had my v twin stroked and my guy told me try not to stay at same rpm for long periods go through the ranges dont red line but dont be afriad to get on it either. so far my 96 incher has made me smile have fun

    This may sound corny, but I believe in a true break-in period specified by the owner's manual. Think of it this way...

    You wouldn't go to the gym and start right off with running as fast as you can, or lifting the heaviest weights you can would you? No, you work up to those levels. Same with race cars. Ever notice how they "warm up" their cars by running several laps at a slower than racing speed prior to putting the pedal to the metal?

    A new engine is going to be tight, and there will be tolerances that have to be correct for proper operation for long periods of time down the road. Plus, it's recommended to change the "break-in oil" sooner than you would a normal oil change.

    Vary your speeds, try not to run the rpms up too high in each gear, shift smoothly, and change the oil often and I think your engine will treat you better than say, if you run it hard right out of the box.
