I have a 2004 Softail Classic with 16,000 on the odometer. Just started to hear a "clicking" sound from the engine. Have not had a chance to investigate but I suspect something is amiss with the tappets. Is this common for this age and mileage? Am I on the right track? Thanks in advance.

I don't ride the bike particularly hard and chnge the oil and filter every 5000 miles. I use Amsoil.

I have an 02' Heritage Classic with 25K on it and no noises. I run AMSOIL also, but change it every 2500 to 3000. I change the primary at 5000 and the tranny at 7500.

JMO, but I wouldn't recommend running any oil, dino or synthetic, for 5000 miles between changes. Might be ok to run it that long on a water cooled engine.

Actually that is HD's new service interval on the TC motors, I wouldn't try it on an evo or shovel but the TC has better engineering and manuf processes behind it.

I'd be interested to know what the runout on the crankshaft measures. Sounds like you scissored the crank and due to the wobble in the shaft the oil pump comes apart. This is an all too often occurance in the twin cams. I wonder if the cranks are being built by a new contractor because we've been seeing this on many 06 and newer engines.
