I have a 1990 flst. Its been using oil for past couple of yrs. Was confused because i have no smoke or leaks. So it started to leak around the outer primary seal. Went to replace the seal and found 3 1/2 qts oil in there! Great I found were the oil is going. I thought it would be a seal at the output shaft I could replace this winter.
The problem I have is I told the local harley dealer the problem and they said I need a re-manufactured motor. Can that be true or are they trying to make a buck? Forgot to mention the bike has 30,000 mi on it and runs great. If I do need a new motor I'll just keep adding oil & draining it out of the primary a couple times a year

Unfortunately they may not be chittin you...the steel insert in the case was prone to leaking and if that's the case the only fix is a new block...but before you give up on it,check the seal and also the retainer screws that hold the alternator plug in...hopefully it's one of the them...
Harley did replace the cases on the ones that failed, but that was 15-20 yrs ago...Good luck trying to get it done now on their dime...

Thanks so much, at least I know what I'm dealing with now. Plus glad to know the dealer is being honest.

It's possible it's true and it's also possible they are trying to make a buck. How can the dealer know for sure until the primary, compensating sprocket, stator & rotor are removed and you check for a bad oil seal or loose or missing screws that hold the stator plug retainer in? If you have the leak between the insert and the block, everybody tells me a new set of cases is in order. If you remove the large (round) inspection cover, the oil in the primary should be just below the edge of it.
You may have to trust that the dealer will tell the truth once the motor is inspected. But by all means, have it inspected first before going off and buying another motor. It could just be a $2 oil seal that's the problem.

Oh I know about the bearings in the cases going bad at times too. They needed stronger cases.

If you need a new engine might look for a nice Midwest 113
