I will pick up my 07 softail this week. It's my first fuelinjected motor.

Does anybody have good sugestions on intake and exhaust upgrades?

Also, what about coil, sparkplug wires and sparkplugs. What would be the

best changes for the easiest torque and horsepower gains?

Change out the 6th ranked Harley synthetic to a better one described in this report https://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/eaam.aspx. Royal Purple probably claims the most horsepower improvement http://royalpurple.com/techrp/summary.html , but at a cost as it was only ranked 8th.

I think Mobil1 motorcycle oil (ranked #2) and AMSOIL (ranked #1) both say they will improve horspower about 1% over petroleum oil. I heard from a high level AMSOIL Direct Jobber that an S&S engine saw a 5% increase in horsepower when the owner switched from the Harley Syn3 to AMSOIL at the Sturgis dyno test this year. Same dyno, same tech, tests run within an hour of each other. The dyno technician couldn't believe it and double checked. He could find no mistake. I'd like to see some documentation on this.

    Knucklehead,

The emission package on the 06 Dyna sucks. The O2 sensor keeps you from running right with any pipes other than muffler type exhaust (harley slipons). I played hell for the last 6 months trying to get mine right. I finally spent the $270 on a Powercommander, and it runs like a scalded dog now. The HD Downloads richen the mix a little, but the O2 sensors keep the bike leaned out too much for a real performance exhaust. The PC will eliminate the O2 sensors and let the bike run at an optimal level.

To answer your questions, I went with the Python staggered duals and a SE air kit (or a big sucker is about the same), and the bike really came to life. They are a little on the loud side, but it's not a drag pipe type sound. If you prefer a quieter sound you can tone them down with either the V&H quiet baffles, or you can get some fiberglass packing and wrap around the outside of the original baffle to take the edge off the sound. This is much cheaper than $55+ for the quiet baffles, and gives it that low rumble at cruising speed that sounds amazing.

I haven't done anything with the plugs, wires, coils. But the air kit, pipes and the PCIII put a big @ss smile on my face.

Well I am by no means an expert but here’s my thoughts on the matter. For the intake get what you like the looks of SE, Big sucker, S&S…..they will all flow more that stock and more that enough for a stock 88 or even a 95”. i have a EFI Road King and I got the S&S air cleaner. same goes for the exhaust. I’m running “wild pig pipes” slip on mufflers (great sound too). Until you do some major engine hop-ups you wont see any benefit from messing with the coil, wires & stuff. When its time to replace the plugs something in a platinum is always good. Get the PCIII USB so you can tune the bike to run good with whatever combo you go with. There is a good article in this months American Iron mag that really explains the EFI system and all the tuning devices. If you want I could scan it for ya.
