I have a few dollars to spend on my '97 Dyna Wideglide over the winter. I've been thinking about a nice streetable cam (suggestions here would be appreciated). Also some head work. I'm a fairly good performance minded mechanical type person (not to toot my own horn at all. I've just grown up around it). I have done some of my own port work on two cycles, Chevy small blocks and even some alcohol burning Briggs Kart motors. Does anyone have any sources of information or personal experiences on doing some mild port work to the Evo heads? I would imagine an ignition upgrade would also be a good idea.......................aaaahh but then again, what to buy? Any suggestions would be great. Seems to be a lot of very knowledgeable people on this forum. Figured I'd start here. Thanks guys.

    RJ,

My only experience comes from owning one. I don't build engines, although I'd like to if I had time and money.

Anyway, The HD stage 2 kit for your bike comes with the Andrews EV-27 cam. I have been told that this is a great streetable cam. But, this is coming from a guy that owns a touring bike. With your dyna, you may want something that comes on strong higher up on the RPM range so you might keep asking about whats good in a dyna.

The other thing I found is that EVOs need to get thier compression ratio up to at least 9.5 to 1. I think a stock EVO is 8.5 to 1. I accomplished this by having the stock heads shaved 50 or 60 thou. I did not do any port and polishing, but raising the compression was a great increase by itself. The other way to go is get a set of Screaming Eagle EVO heads for about $700. These have bigger valves and also claim to increase the comp to 9.5 to 1.

    Good luck.
    Tom

Install that Andrews cam 2 degrees advanced, and a mild port job on the heads and you will have a great performer! The intake valve closes at 36 degrees after BDC to get you into that 170-180 cylinder pressure sweet spot, if you mill the heads, don't go past 9.5 to 1 CR with that cam.

My '96 Road King is stock 80 inches, .030" over-bore with Keith Black flat top pistons (9.8-1 Comp ratio), Screamin Eagle heads, Andrews EV-27 cam and V&H pro pipe. It dyno'd at 82 HP and 89 FtLbs torque. It runs great on 91 octane and is fairly quick for a Road King. Not an expensive build and has been very reliable.
