Can anyone out there tell me the most likely cause for oil coming out around the air cleaner. It's not running out, but it is enough to cover the cam cover, tranny cover and even reach the rear saddle bag ????

The bike is 88", 6100 miles, Ness air filter kit, stage-one with Vance Hines Oval slip-ones.

Do you have carb or efi? Is the aircleaner stock or aftermarket?

Most likely just blow-by from your crank vent, just wiper-down before you go riding.

    Keep them toes in-the-wind. :D

I installed a Ness Big Sucker. If I take off the air filter, the area around the intake is slightly damp with oil, but no where near the quatity that jtpilot seems to be getting. Sounds like a larger problem.

    What is the configuration?
    Stock? Cams? 95" Miles? Exhaust?

There are several causes of this and it all began with the EVO "nose" breathers in the '93 models. Some engines just seem to puke oil out from the get go and others never have a problem. Engines that have cams with large overlap and exhausts like drag pipes cause reversion and can make a drop seem like an ounce.

A Ness big sucker helps alleviate the problem by routing breather gasses into the intake. SE copied it and gets another $60.00 and does not have a reusable filter.

    Let us know the details...

    RE:eek:il coming out air cleaner

Excessive oil in the air cleaner occurs from a few variables;Ambient temperture,
engine oil temp.,constant high R.P.M.s,HIGH MILES,oil pump failure(wet sumping).I'm sure theres more ,But you get the point.I had some of the same
conditions you are experiencing with my 00' FXDWG last year&decided to tear
it down for a 95"/GEAR-DRIVE cam swap.Found out from some web sites that
99-early 00' TWIN CAMs had issues w/oil pumps & cam plates.I went to start
separating the cams from the plate & watched one of the cams drop to the floor
the second I removed the bearing retainer.Long story told,I did spend a sum of
money on parts for this project; But it's been 5000+ miles with the DELKRON
    cam plate,FEULING SUPERPUMP,FEULING HP lifters,S&S cams & sooo far I
don't see the oil drip under my right knee cap anymore.Check with DIRECT PARTS....you won't be sorry!!!

doherty machine.....(i dont know if direct parts handles them or not..) has an add on to eliminate the blowby in tc88,s. it installs under the rockerbox and allows the oil to return to the crankcase where it belongs. it sells for about 300.00 bucks......i am suprised that the moco hasnt addressed this problem and solved it......

Hi everybody , Been busy and have not posted in a while but i just installed a Kuryakyn Hifive air cleaner with their breather kit and it seems to do the trick .No more oil out of the air cleaner. The only thing i do not like is how they pipe it up to the breather bolts for the XL models but it will do for now until i decide how i will change that. Twin Cam motors are pretty nifty ,they use the stock preformed breather hoses and breather bolts to pipe up the breather.

It must be like CD says....some have it and some don't and who knows why.
On my bike it leaks pretty good if I stay at 80mph for a long time, but only on the front head and not the back head. I installed the Cure from direct parts on the front head only but it didn't do much. I installed the S&S reed valve and it didn't do anything to help either. In fact I think it is worse and again it only comes from the front head. So who knows. :cussing:

I might run a hose to the ground soon.

I have had this problem from brand new on my 06 sporty, the dealers solution was to tell me to make sure the oil level was about half way between full and the add mark, this did not help, still pukes oil when you run it hard. I think the MoCo has a problem here that they are not addressing. That is why i decided to try different breather and A/C to see if i could eliminate the problem. The Kuryakyn breather and A/C seems to have done the trick.

Hey pilot.... problem is the downstroke of the pistons creates enough turbulence in the case to interrupt the normal return of the oil. It builds up in the head until it overwhelms the breather and spits out the breather vents. Running at high rpm and/or increasing the displacement makes it more noticable. One of those things that affect some bikes more then others, however when it usually shows up is when you change air filters. The factory AC was so restrictive, it sucked the oil back into the intake and sent it through the combustion chambers. A less restrictive AC and the oil is not drawn in and collects and drips out the AC cover.
The "doherty cure" has a re-designed breather to make it more difficult to overwhelm, and part of the install is to drill the oil return hole out larger in the heads so oil can leave and return to the case easier (which can be done by itself without buying anything).
The S&S reed valve lets the turbulent air pass through one way, but prevents it from going back (at the crank bearing )so the air equalizes through other means (the lifter rod covers and inner cam bearings). The turbulence is now re-routed and does not interupt the normal oil return.

blow by is ruining my day

I've read the previous posts about the blow by problem and still have questions. Gas/oil mix on my freshly polished bike and clean jeans just ruins my day. :cussing:
'95 Fat Boy EVO 35,000 mi, Andrews EV-27 cam, 42 Mikuni carb, Crane HI-4 single fire ignition, Hooker long staggered pipes, NO torque valves or restrictions in the exhaust, breathers NOT vented to backing plate, vented to a breather under frame, new S&S breather gear, SE K&N air filter.
When I wash and re-oil the air filter it seems to stop the issue for awhile but then the oil/gas mixture starts pukin' out of the air cleaner again especially when I ride it hard.
I have the rocker boxes off now and was told by a mechanic to drill the small holes next to the rubber breather flap to 1/8" and that would help the oil return but it's coming out of the carb not the breather vents.
I know it seems to be a problem for lots of people with all different motors and accessories but I would REALLY like to fix the problem. Any help would be appreciated. I apologize for the lengthy post but wanted to give as much info as possible.

Gas on the jeans could be a stuck float or other carb issue, For the oil S&S has a breather reed valve for EVO's to stop oil carry over that has been around awhile. (different product then the breather gears) JP part# 433-189

    thanks for the help

Thanks Reese ... at this point I'm willing to try anything even going back to the stock cam so there is no valve overlap. I don't think it's the float because it did it with the CV carb too and because it's gas and oil.
I'm almost starting to think valve job or new pistons rings time.

You have a tried and proven combo, overlap is not the issue. If it was valve or rings, you will be burning oil and have smoke coming out pipes, would not be sending oil out carb. Breather spitting out the air cleaner still most likely source on oil, gas has to be carb related, or possible intake or fuel supply leak (or even tank). Running down from something and possibly picking up some oil off the engine from gasket leak and bringing it with it. Base of cylinder very common to oil leaks on EVO's.

Hey Cowboy, I just got myself a education on how gas can come back out the carb..........

First check if tank vent is working, if not when you ride the heat off the engine will build up pressure in the tank and force gas up through the needle and seat in the float bowl and out the carb.
The following I robbed off another site... interesting reading.......

I had this in another post....
Now for the gas thing....it's called "FUEL STAND OFF''....this is a characteristic of a internal combustion engine with a carb on it. It has nothing to do with your jetting or acceleration pump intake leaks or timing......it's a pulse wave that happens when a column of air(intake) traveling at 650 feet per second into a cylinder THEN the valve closes on this column of air. The column of air with a charge of fuel in it just doesn't stop, (who was it that said for every action there is a reaction?) any way when the valve closes the charged column of air traveling at a speed of 650 fts bounces off that valve and makes it's way to the other head where it bounces off that closed valve and the column makes it's way out through the carb....now here is where this gets interesting...the carb isn't too smart, It doesn't realize which way the air is traveling so as it goes over the venture it picks up more fuel in the column of air that already had a charge of fuel in it....when the column of charged air hits the atmosphere it's like hitting a brick wall so the air is reflected back into the engine as a little weaker pulse wave but since the fuel is much heavier than air the fuel continues out into the atmosphere soaking your air filter and the whole right side of the bike depending on how long you have the bike under a load at high throttle positions.
To witness this you can take off your air filter and do a few runs on the dyno and watch this STAND OFF happen before your eyes....a plumb of fuel will hover out side the mouth of the carb up to 8'' away depending on the displacement of the engine, cam overlap, and exhaust system used.
Now when you take the time to set up ''Intake Track Tuning'' this waisted gas can actually be pulled back into the engine and used instead of washing your air filter. Intake Track Tuning is using the pulse waves of the intake to assist in cylinder fill by timing the wave to hit the intake valve as it is starting to open.....these are the things you do on motors that need the the EDGE to be a winner.

Hope this helped you to understand whats going on with your bike, you don't see or smell this gas on a bike with a stock air filter because it's all tightly sealed, nor will you see STAND OFF in a EFI bike because there is no fuel to pick up on the way out.
If you continue to have a problem with the fuel on your bike and/or clothes take one of your wife's (or girl friends), light day pads and place it in the bottom of the football A/C cover....this will absorb all the fuel and oil from the breather, the fuel will evaporate and the oil will be trapped in the pad. Now one more piece of advice...........................change out the panty shield ever 28 days.

Go on and laugh but this really works....don't use the pant shields with the WINGS.... the wing will stick out the cover and drip on the engine.
