Exhaust Gaskets

    Would you reuse the SE type gaskets?? I would like to install my new pipes tonight. Thanks for the input...:D

    Nope, go buy new

    and JMO I wouldn't use SE, used to buy into the hype
    about more performance, fact is you won't see it
    on the street, only the dyno will know the extra .4 hp
    and you risk leaks,

    JMO the stock conical allow better seal,
    and better seal means better scavenging (no leaks)
    and better AFR, and easier to tune.

    But that's just me...

    I like the ease of use of the Se gaskets I must admit. I tried those wire mesh crush type and I absolutely hated them.. However I will give them another try, just means that I have to wait a little longer...

    Agree with HRK, never reuse the old ones or you could wind up with a leak. Stock gaskets work fine.

    OK. One last question, do the dealers stock exhaust flanges? I am now wondering if my leaking issues that I have had in the past are due to that instead of the gaskets. I will get new ones and I was planning on it anyway. What do you think guys??

    Because i'm cheap, I've used the same exhaust flanges on this bike with 3 different sets of pipes, no leaks, I use new stock gaskets, sometimes the head pipe is hard to get a good fit on the exhaust port, I just keep messing with it until it fits correctly and then tighten per spec's.

    should be fine.

    You should get new exhaust nuts though
    they heat, expand, contract,

    There is a trick to getting the conical
    stock gaskets in.

    1) clean area well, remove all exhaust residue
    2) If needed use some emery cloth to clean out the lands for the gasket
    3) insert gasket smoothly and slowly, work your way around it with light
    pressure until its started to seat

    DO NOT press up on one side after angling in the gasket or
    you'll bend it in and have to straighten it and then - leak possible.

    SE goes in easier, however you have less material to
    help seal, and longer term, that might let it leak

    Also install it all "loose"
    then tighten down to heads
    alternating bolts on each pipe to spec.

    Then when you have the pipes tight
    to the frame, back of the flange nuts
    and re torque.

    Ride and after first couple of rides check
    flange nuts, loosen, tighten..

    More than likely it was the exhaust gaskets you used or didn't you check em for tightness.

    Flanges johnny,

    you don't need new ones
    but I'd opt for new gaskets and 4 new
    exhaust bolts.

    Cheap insurance...

    Sorry about that. OK, but I just won't do the crush type. Boy are the gaskets that were in there in bad shape. Since I have some stuff apart, should I drop that pilot size now or wait??

    On thing that I just noticed because it has been a long time since I have taken my pipes off is that the nuts on the head studs are smooth rather than jagged to grip into the flange. should I when I put those on use those type? can I use a lock washer??

    Agree with the others,reuse HD flanges if they're in good shape,new gaskets and nuts...tighten down evenly,should be fine...If not the crush type gasket,whatcha using?? SE's are crush type just thinner...

    Up to you with the carb...if you want to try a smaller jet,put it in go through the procedure(warm bike up to running temp,increase idle,adjust idle mix,reset idle and try it out) your choice there....

    I would leave jets alone
    see what happens when the pipes are on it,
    that jet might be right, 50/50 chance
    one thing at a time.
