I found a clean 2000 Honda 250 Rebel for my lady to learn to ride. The bike runs good and is mechanically sound. The question I have concerns the exhaust system. The stock pipes were set up one on each side with a crossover. This bike at some time in the past was modified to bring both exhausts to the right side, aka staggered shorty duals on a Sportster, with no connecting pipe. Each cylinder now has a straight pipe to the slip-ons. They are branded “Jansfeld”, which I am not familiar with. I seem to remember the crossover pipe is designed to equalize pressures in the exhaust system.

Should I be looking at putting a stock exhaust system back on? I note a slight deceleration lean pop and there is some bluing on the headers, which also seems within the normal range for a bike this age with 4,500 miles. I realize this is only a training bike, but she’s really proud of it and I’d like to keep it running strong while she gets some on-road training here in rural Pennsylvania.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If this is for her to learn to ride, don't do anything to it yet. If she sets it down, it won't be on new exhaust pipes!

does the new exhaust system have baffles??? if so i would run it as is....if not i would baffle em. has anything else been done for "upgrades" to the engine, of just straights for noise?

ChuckTX, it would appear there are no baffles. The sound is loud but not obnoxious because of the small displacement. Looking at the carb and the condition of the motor gaskets, I strongly suspect absolutely nothing else was done to it. I will look for an appropriate baffle system, per your suggestion.

Thanks for all the feedback from everyone. I am on my seventh bike - 2001 FXSTD with stage I and VH slipons - but watching her work with this thing is a real kick. I forgot how much fun it is to have your first motorcycle. Will keep you posted on her progress.
