I'm thinking about pulling the the buffles out of my long shots. i have a 06 softtail. will it adversely effect my performance. i already have a se high flow ac, and a power commander.

should exhaust tips ever turn anything but black? I know the bike runs a little rich.

Anytime you alter the backpressure of your exhaust, you need to alter the fuel delivery to match.

Rather than pulling your baffles you may want to consider replacing them with different or aftermarket baffles. Unbaffled long shots may sound like a monster but you will lose most of your low end torque in doing so. Also removing the baffles won't necessarily give you more flow. Aside from reducing noise, baffles also help prevent reversion and maintain the required velocity of 300 fpm in larger pipes.

Just about any change you make to the baffle is going to require a change to your power commander. Rather than gauging your exhaust tips I'd check your plugs for any apparent fouling.

If you are looking for that LOUD unbaffled sound but want to maintain power, there's a cheap trick that works well. This is similar to what a Thunder Monster will accomplish for alot cheaper.

    1. Find a deadbolt door strike
    2. bend the door strike to form an "L" shape
    3. mount the "L" shaped piece on the same bolt that holds the baffle
The farther back inside the pipe the better this modification works. I also saw someone use two per pipe to tune the exhaust note even further.

I've been in the process of testing something I fabricated which has a similar effect, but a little more refined than a door striker. Once I finish testing it I'll share it here and maybe get others to try it out.
It should look something like this

    thanks for the info

I understand every thing but the part with the door stops. are you saying i could modify the sound using the L-shaped bracket to move the buffles further back?

No, actually the L shaped (bent) piece of metal acts as a barrier. The bent piece is in the path of the exhaust to deflect. If you look at the drawing with the circle, you are looking into the tailpipe. That view shows the bent metal as it would appear inside the pipe following the baffle, or if in place of the baffle if none used. One end of the "L" would mount to the baffle bolt to secure it.

    Make sense???

another way to do this is to use a flat washer with a bolt welded to it. the bolt will will be double nutted. drill hole in muffler, as far forward as you can, stick the bolt through the hole and use the other nut to secure. you can now adjust the flat washer like a flue on a bbq pit or fireplace. i hope this helps. use a big flat washer with a fair sized hole to start, and keep checking plugs for rich/lean situation. i dont know how to draw on a puter so i hope my explaintion is sort of clear. if not let me know and i will answer your questions. just another way to skin a cat.......

    getting there

I think i understand now. is it that these things you provide backpressure, yet allow them to be nice and loud? maybe even adjust the sound?:drunk:

yes.....you need the backpressure, and with these mods you are able to adjust the noise level. when doing mods, monitor your plugs for lean/rich conditions....very important!

For thoes of you that like "the rice rocket" sound you can "U" bolt a kazoo in your drag pipes, tuning is accomplished by plugging the valves.

Yeah, I hear you. My wife is head of technical communications for a major player in the software industry and to get the devs (programers) to sit and chat about what they are doing to the products, she has a wide array of "toys" on her desk to keep them busy while she picks their brains. A kazoo is one of them, no one has yet to know what it is or how to use it. So much for a MIT education.:roflmao:

    thanks

i got it now,it's a great idea, with a lot of room for enginering. one other thing. what about the thing of tuning the exhaust by moving the buffles back or forth. anybody heard tell of that:confused:

    It was called a Snuffer

Back in 65' you could go to a Ricer shop and buy em. Called a "snuffer." Yup just a Big washer But spring loaded with a knob. Drill hole, bolt in and twist to any position you like. Just gives you some backpressure and "snuffs" the sound.

Did you forget what it sounded like ? It made the bike sound like a fart machine. That is why you can no longer buy Snuffers. Stick your tongue out and blow and you will remember.

It will sound cool be loud and piss off everyone around you, I know I used to do it on bike nights, had some fool up there trying to make noises with a crotch rocket loved to show up and wind it up.

So I pulled the baffles, when he went to do the nightly ritual I fired it up and drowned him out, of course it had a lot of people upset and with their hands over their ears LOL

Will kill the low end those pipes do that anyway so you will be loosing more power.

One trick besides the others you hear is to cut the baffles down about 50% that will get you backpressure and more sound.

Also before drilling a hole in the muffler get a bolt that will thread through the existing baffle bolt hole, then run a longer bolt up into the muffler there's your restriction to help tq.

Old trick was to get one of the bolts with the head bent over to form a O at the top like a thumb screw, feed it through the baffle and nut it on the outside. Same result.
