I've heard they can get dirt and other debris between the bra and the painted surface and cause scratching.

The thing is be sure it fits tight and that you have it properly installed
They can get loose and flap when you ride and beat the snot out of the paint

Be sure to clean the surface,
I would get a ClayBar system (McGuires Clay etc) to get all the dirt and
bugs etc off, lay on a couple of coats of wax and a good polish.

BTW 3m makes a kit of clearcoat protectors that you apply once
and it protects the paint and it won't scratch or move..

    3m ScotchCal Paint Protectors

This protects the tank, I think you can get sheets to make your own fender and faring covers.

Had one, returned it instantly.Worst crap I ever paid HD for.
I'd rather have the fairing repainted then use some cheesey crap like that.
    Oops...thinking aloud again...sorry guys.
