Fairing removal

    Have a 06 streetglide,and want to remove the fairing to adjust the handlebars. The local harley mechanic said after removal i need a special tool install the ignition switch which i can't buy. all this to adjust handlebars?????? Please help!!!!!!

    A buddy of mine has an 06 Stretglide. We removed and reinstalled his fairings without any special tools. There were some difficulties but it can be done with some perseverance.

    moe, the special tool he was refering to is used to remove the ign switch so you are able to getthe plate off, so you can get to the allen screws holding your bars. if you have your service manual, it will take you through the steps really well. the special tool is a small screw driver to hold a tab while turning the key.....it is a cakewalk...if you use the steps in the service manual.....which is the BEST tool you can own

    thanks for the in put. the mechanic showed me a t-handle type of key that is needed to re-install the ignition switch. getting a shop manual this week, and giving it a go.

    i am not sure what the T-handle is, but i have had mine out a couple of times....the service manual will explain it in detail.....best tool for the buck!!!

    Chuck, that's the best advice yet. The service manual for your bike IS the best tool you can own. It is indispensible in your shop when working on your bike. At least it's one tool that's always available. :D

    the manual will also give pictures sometimes and you can build your own tool

    i'm going to get a manual saturday, i might pick up a cruise control unit and install it while i have the fairing off. thanks for asking.

    ok, i should have been specific in my first post, i need to remove the inner fairing and fairing cap (part under the ingnition switch) question: can i remove the ingnition switch knob with out putting the forks in the lock position.
