I am about to buy a used 2007 Ultra Classic
If the bike has a Stage1 kit installed and Rinehart pipes does that void the warranty?

    Thanks

There is no stage one downloads that I know of from the factory for any 2007 or newer. The MoCo went to a "closed loop" system with oxygen sensors on that year. You can get something like a Vance and Hines fuel pack, or one like a Power Commander to change the settings. The dealer I bought my 2007 Road King Police bike from, told me that as long as it was set up properly, they would honor the warranty there at that dealership. Problem is, if you are out somewhere 1000 or more miles away, and something breaks, it's up to the dealer to decide what caused it. I'm not saying they will or will not honor the warranty, but they don't have to. If a dealer says it's void because of the changes, then HD will back them and your warranty is void at all dealerships after that time. My dealer told me, the only changes I could make that would be backed by the Motor Company, was to put on Screaming Eagle slip ons and leave the rest bone stock. That's what I did, and I'm fairly happy with it.... then again, the Police bike has the big bore kit from the factory too. 103 CI with a 6 speed, fun bike.

    Oh, and welcome Johng

Lets be a little more clear about honoring warranty and being away from home.

First, the installation of an aftermarket part doesn not void any warranty. If any SM or SW at a dealer tells you your warranty is void because you put V&H pipes on, he's basically violating the Federal law under the FTC called the Magnuson Moss Act.

Basically the act says that the manuf not the dealer, has to prove that the part you put on your bike, car, boat, washing machine caused the damage. If they can't prove it, they have to honor the warranty.

So if your bike won't start and the starters gone, having V&H pipes could not have caused that problem.

So go with any pipes and air filter kit you want.

I would suggest for tuning you invest in the SERT or Screaming Eagle Race Tuner, or a powercommander, V&H fuel pack, the SERT is the most expensive but the most tuneable. It can be changed and tuned anytime you change something like heads, cams, throttle body etc.

Now it's not beyond a dealer to give you crap and say they are not doing the work under warranty and basically screwing you when you are in bumfart montana and there's not another dealer in 200 miles.

You can always call the MoCo customer service right there from the dealer and complain about the situation, Dealers will act properly when the MoCo calls back they don't like that.

HD wants happy customers, as long as you're reasonable.

Now put in Andrews cams, Ross pistons, someones valves, have the heads machined, put on a different throttle body, a zippers thundermax ecm and then the bike breaks a rod, well you could say that the aftermarket part voided the warranty if it could be proven that all those parts caused the motor to go.

Now saying that just because they won't pay the warranty claim on the motor doesn't mean the rest of your warranty is gone, its not.

Also if any dealer tells you to maintain the warranty they have to service it and use HD oil and filters only, tell them,

"Great, love to do that, I like the idea of a HD dealer making me use HD parts because under federal law (same act) if I'm required to buy and use the manuf parts to maintain the warranty I get it for free!, So sign me up when do I come in for the free oil change and service!"

    Watch their eyes bug out.

Then tell them in a straight tone, your service threat just put the dealership and hd in violation of a federal law. You can't make me come in here or force the use of hd parts unless you give them for free.

    They know that.

Hotroadking, perhaps I wasn't clear enough on my post previously. For that I apologize. I really thought that what I said covered it about as well, although I may have left some assumptions. I think it's pretty well understood that if the engine lets loose (they are engines, motors are electric) a rod or such, then it wasn't because you put tires on other than the originals.

I don't want to get into a pissing match over this. To be more clear in what I said, or meant to say is this.... What he is trying to do here is what most of us are wanting. More sound, more power, more of what most think of as Harley. But the Screaming eagle slip ons are EPA compliant. If you change to Rineharts and use a fuel pack, is it still EPA compliant? That's the same Federal guidelines you are speaking of that protect you. If you put a non compliant slip on muffler on your bike, and you end up lean burning a hole in the top of the piston, don't think that Harley or most dealers are going to stand behind ignorance.
