That really sucks , out for a ride and some idiots can't wait to pass until it is safe. I hope they catch the person that caused it and throw the book at them.

Witnesses said the Honda was doing better than 80 when he caused the wreck and didn't stop. - The Leo's are still lookin for the driver and when they get them I hope they lock em up and lose the keys.:gah:

Better yet, put him in his Honda and then run him down with a bull dozer, same thing.

The guy driving while drinking was in the oncoming lane,
    the bikes in the other

A gold Honda Civic passed the bikes at 95+ and forced the
guy that had been drinking off the road and the guy drinking
over corrected and hit the bikes, purely unintentional on his part

The person we should be pissed off at is the
racer in the gold honda that left the scene.... He caused
the wreck, without him, it's just people passing each other
in opposite directions, even the bike group leader said
    the same thing.

Drinking and driving or riding don't mix, and perhaps
completely sober the guy forced off the road would not have
made the move to come back on the road,

Either way 5 people died that didn't need to die...

The update last night was that one of the fatalities was the car's passenger, the girlfriend of the car driver and she was killed instantly.

While I agree it was not entirely this guy's fault but rather the a-hole Honda driver who passed the group of bikers on the wrong side of the highway, had this guy not been drunk he probably could have reacted properly.

Not sure if I am buying the DUI part. The accident was cause by the Civic. I am one of those people who think that the DUI charges are getting out of hand. Not saying that I am for drinking and driving but I have had to many experience with cops getting out of hand because they smell alcohol. My sister in law got hand cuffed and thrown in a back seat of the cop car after an accident because she had a glass a wine for lunch. The case was thrown out but thats was after $5000 for a lawyer.

I rode that stretch for years back in the '90s. No friggin' reason for a fatal wreck there. Tend to agree that DUI charges have gotten out of hand, but I guarantee that the DUI of that one driver did contribute.
    P.S. - Pack riding sucks!

I don't don't think we have any idea if the alcohol contributed or not. I didn't read anything about Blood alcohol just that they smelled alcohol on his breath. The guy could of had one beer as far as we know. The attention should be the A hole who got impatient and tried to pass everyone. In a panic situation none of us can say what we would do. With a car coming head on at me I might react better if I had a few beers in me.

Fair enough. But just remember that every idiot that is pulled over when the LEO suspects impairment lies about what he has consumed. There are numerous news stories on our local TV where the driver claimed to have had "just a few beers" but blows something like a 1.4 into the breathalizer.

In Wisconsin we have a strong Tavern Lobby. My state leads the nation in brandy sales and the sale of bratwurst. My guess that we will never see the end of abuse in restaurants and bars because of the money on the table. While only 25% of our population smokes we only recently received anti-smoking legislation in bars--something New York has had for years. Never underestimate the impact of money.

I also read that the car missed the first few bike & came into the pack about mid way , just the smell of booze is not enough to hang the poor guy ,& the leed rider stated it was not the guy's fauilt in the Dodge that the honda car was to blame

    Very true--in this example.

But an accident is a combination of many variables, like the road surface, the weather, the time of day and the competency of all of the drivers in the wreck. I've missed a lot of wrecks by keeping a cool head and steering out of the potential accident.

(I'll bet numerous members here have also done this.)

We even hear of tragic wrecks with semi trucks whose drivers have fallen asleep. Do we really want to face events where the addition of alcohol becomes another factor? Those drivers knew they drank before they climbed behind the wheel. I do not wish to be maimed over "a few beers."

Things maybe different here in Maryland. With just the smell of alcohol you can get a DUI. I can't be the only one that enjoys a cold beer a long with thier pit beef sandwich. Hell there was one charity ride I went on last year when the State and local police escorted about a 1000 bikers to a bar, Red eyes dock bar. I bet 90% of those bikers had at least one beer if not two. Its going to get to the point that the only time you can have a adult beverage is at your own home. I also enjoy a cigar but can't do that anymore, not in a bar anyway.
