Doug, Welcome to Bike Talk you will find friendly people and good info.

My first piece of advice is to PLEASE STOP!!!. Yes, there is a float and it is much like a standard car type working off of resistance.

However, you can easily damage the unit and the gauge if you do not follow the procedure.

Others will chime in with a second bit of advice. Please get and use the service manual. Buy, beg or borrow one but use it for the procedure. Fuel is nothing to play with and vapors with a spark make a big boom.

I don't have a late model Softail book but I am sure someone here can post the step by step if you cannot get a manual.

The first step is to get yourself a service manual so you can remove the sending unit without breaking it. Next is to bend the float arm about 1/4 inch to the left because it is hanging up on the center channel of the tank. Don't screw up the sending unit rheostat when bending the arm. This is a very common problem.

What everybody else said about the S/M. I keep mine open all the time.

My '04 Heritage gauge stuck on full and wouldn't budge. Taking out the sending unit and simply putting back in fixed it. It hangs up in the tank. Annoying. I don't have the bike anymore, but the new owner is havingtroulbe with it again. I have an '04 Fat Boy now, and no problem with the gas gauge at all.
