    Hey guys,

I bought a 2001 Heritage in March 2008 from the original owner. The bike only had 5100 miles on it when I purchased it. The first owner had Vance & Hines Long Shots, had the carb re-jetted, and had a breather upgrade done by Harley before he took possession of the bike back in 2001. It runs good and strong and never has missed a beat while I rode 4000 miles this summer. My only complaint is the fuel mileage. This bike was listed at 48 mpg on the highway and the best I can get is 39 mpg. Should I be getting better than that??

Once you start to change it up from stock your mileage will drop , it also depends on how much weight you where careing on your trip ie second person & all the stuff ie extra cloths & tools , wind drag

the biggest killer of fuel mileage is the right hand......to much twist!!!! lol lol
check the airpressure in the tires weekly, try to limit hammerin it, keep hiway speed at 70 or less.....then check mileage. if it is still bad start checking other areas. plugs, carb, pipes......let us know..........:)

    Almost same bike

    Good Morning,

Funny thing here is I bought roughly the exact same bike last Thursday. I know mine has 40k miles on it and that mine also has Screaming Eagle II exhaust systems. I am not too sure what if any other mods were made to the bike but I really need to find out. Funny thing is today I was calculating the mileage on mine and it is getting right at 40. OK maybe 39 or 38 BUT I know my main reason for gas consumption is my right wrist! I am TRYING to do slower starts but it sure is hard with all that torque right there waiting to be used. :) OH forgot to mention that my roughly 40mpg is a roughly 50/50 mix of highway and city miles.

ANY WAY Great looking bike and hope we can compare notes again soon.

    Lee

Don't forget that ethanol will kill off about 10 to 15% of your mileage capacity

weight, riding style, tires, wind, all factor.

Hey I got 39 mpg with only me on the bike and with proper air pressure. I ran 55 to 60 mph on a state hwy and babied the throttle. I had the carb looked at by a local mechanic and he said it looked as if someone has been monkeying with the carb. I am thinking of a buying new CV harley 44 carb. Do you think this will help??

    hmm

I just topped mine off today. I had 122.x miles on the trip meter and put in exactly 3 gallons. So looks like I got 40mpg with a 50/50 mix of highway and city.

I am by no means a specialist but if they are telling you that it looks like the carb has been tampered with and they can not rebuild it cheaper then i would personally consider replacing it. However I always thought that one of the benefits of having a carb is the ability to fix em backup cheap.

you are correct, but if someone put a s&s super g or some such on it, the mileage will never be good......hoping he can tell us what carb it is, it came with a cv i believe....and if so, kens kit will make it purr like a kitten and be real stingy with the gas!!!!!!!:)

yeah my buddy in Germany has a mikuni on his. he has perfomance out the arse but makes way more stops. If he has a cv carb then he should be ok with a (if you will) repair kit.

Unless you have more than a 95" engine with flowed heads and a big cam stick with the 40mm CV. The CV44 is too much carb for an 88" and not needed on a 95" until you get into headwork. It will slow air velocity on the intake and IMO velocity is more important than volume.

It has the original 40 CV carb on it. My meachanic says that this carb has been drilled?? I just want to start fresh with a new carb.

I have ordered a Mikuni HSR 42 easy kit. This is the carb that Mikuni recommends for the extra equipment that my bike has.

How does the Mikuni 42 compare to the CV 40??

The Mik is an excellent carb too, a few more tuning adjustments available on it(which can drive you nuts) but if you've got freeflowing aircleaner and pipes it should be set pretty close right out of the box. It's a flat slide as opposed to Constant Velocity(CV)

the mikuni 42 is just what my buddy in Germany has. He has very little to NO problems with that carb. sorry to hear that the one you currently have has been mucked around with but I think you will be OK with the mikuni. Let me know how it goes. I would TRULY be interested.

    What is mucked around with?

    Slide drilled?

    Slide can be replaced

Used cv's are always on ebay cheap.

Mik is good, still need to tune it,

Joe Minton is the man on Mikunis worked for them for years

Here is his "lean kit" article, you need to order the lean kit as well

    Lean Kit Tuning

This will get you performance and mileage.

    i use a 42 mikuni GREAT

I found the dyna I have goes well with the 42 mikuni. my bike is a 2000 dina built to 95" ported and larger manley valves and springs-570SS gear cams-delkron support plate-fuelling oil pump-scream' eagle eletronics (programable)-10/1 scream'e pistons teflon coated python 3 exh.-scrm'n eagle air- turning a 6 speed gear box. I havn't put it on a dino yet but the motor was patterned after one that got 114 hp & lots of torque. It does get up and scoot! The micuni is an OK product. BUT with simple mods on my cv.... I really didn't notice much different with power, just a little Quicker response (more gas shot into the motor from accel-pump)...... The minuki has a good tune booklet that comes with the purchase if it is bot in the box..(usually a shop HIDES that info' from you $$$$ in their pockets for added tuning)... giving you excellent knowledge on HOW TO TUNE IT. It's jetting made exacting as it goes larger or smaller on main jet by .002 and by.001 on the idle jets. GOOD STUFF signed....REDHEAD:fight:

i have an 03 dyna. i put on a set of harley slipons, and a ness big sucker aid cleaner housing. didn't like the extra width of the air cleaner. a fienr had an old style tin air cleaner with a wire wrapped in foam element in it. with a few mods i made it fit on my ness backing plate. with a cover made out of an old cooking pot, painted with black wrinkle paint. i thought it ran good with the plug over the air screw pulled out so i could adjust the air screw. it still had an off idle stumble, had it from new. thought about changing carbs. saw kenfuzed talk anout his kit. thought what the f$%^. best money i ever spent. flipped flopped on wether to drill the slide, the kit was set up to have the slide drilled, so i drilled it. before thecarb kit i got an average of 52-54 mpg. after the kit 48-50. the throttle responce and the better overall performance was well worth the few less mpgs. if you have a stock cv carb get the kit. thats all you need.
