FXR vs Dyna

    Having read about CD's FXR he's building got me to wondering about the difference between the FXR and a Dyna. I had been thinking of a custom dyna chassis with the RevTech 100/6 speed.

    I think the Dyna chassis is a little more modern. I just got a custom Dyna on the road a couple of months ago and love it, so, I'm a little bias for the Dyna. But then again, I have also owned an FXR and loved every minute of it too. I don't think you could go wrong owning either one of them. :D

    I think it boils down to how rigid the frames are. The FXR is very rigid by design. Eric Buell wanted a bike that handled as well as it looked. The Dyna initially sacrificed ridgitity for style. Unless you plan on riding hard or like to push it a bit hard in the corners, the early Dyna's are just fine.

    Custom FXR parts are not as readily available as they are for Dyna's. If I was building a more traditional custom swingarm bike I would probably select a Dyna setup since there are so many common items that fit both the Softail and Dyna.

    I am building an FXR primarily because I love them and I like to do out of the box stuff. When I used to drag race a lot of friends and customers would get on us because we ran small block MOPAR's and they ran Chevy's. Our reply was that it required very little work to make good power out of a small block Chevy and we called it a menu motor. Go to the counter tell them how much HP and they give you a list. Back then, getting the same power out of a MOPAR or a small block Ford was a lot more interesting to us.

    Thanks for both reply's. I'm still trying to figure out how to finance this next build and convince my wife that the money shouldn't be put somewhere more practical. My ideas keep evolving, though.
