I checked the oil and the crank case was full of gas. Changed the oil and put 2 gallons of gas in the tank. Started it and with the eng running within 2 min all the gas drained to the crank case

Don't know a lot about that particular model but I'll tell you what I do know. The valve on Harleys that's supposed to keep oil from draining down into the crankcase from the tank ain't all that great & especially when a bike sits for long periods of time, can & often does fail. Gasoline can get into the oil for several reasons, but 2 gallons in 2 minutes makes no sense @ all. If everything is hooked up right it's not possible, even if that valve is bad.

and the bike was running at the time. Have not changed anything on the bike and it has allways run good. Now it does sit a lot. Less than 5000 miles on a 1999.

Then the valve that's supposed to keep oil from draining down into the crankcase would be the 1st thing I'd check. Then the oil pump & lines - Harleys have a "dry sump" oil system & the pump is supposed to "scavange" oil from the crankcase, return it to the tank & keep the oil moving all the time when the engine's running. Harleys don't need much oil pressure, but they do need lots of oil flow (for cooling) & the system is designed for high flow, not high pressure.

Then I'd pull the float bowl off the carb & check to see if there's any trash in there & if the needle & seat are in good shape. If the needle tip is worn and/or if there's trash in there, the needle won't close all the way down on the seat & gas will not stop flowing when it should.

Crankcase full of gas means you have a stuck float in the carb

    Drain the crankcase of everything

Pull the carb off and clean it out and be sure the float is sitting level and that it works to shut off fuel.

What happens is the float sticks, the carb fills with gas, and because the bike is leaning to the left, it pours gas down the intake to the cases, sometimes you can unstick a float by tapping the bottom of the carb.

Me I'd pull it apart and make sure it's in good condition and properly setup.

    Gravity, it's the law.

Is the float level correct (factory service manual)? Is the needle closing all the way down on the seat?

the only way for the gas to get to the crankcase is through the carb, unless someone plumbed the gas tank incorectly. you have a float and needle/seat problem. because you have a carb you should turn the gas off at the petcock whenever the engine is stopped. you will need to flush the oil system a few times to rid the engine of gas.......let us know how it goes..................:) n

I would guess the float is letting gas continue into the carb

It's the only way into the motor for the gas to flow, so somthings allowing fuel to flow.

Remove the air cleaner, turn on petcock if you have a HD petcock that is vac operated then it shouldn't flow anything unless you have the motor cranking, if it does the petcock is screwed up. Pull fuel line and check flow with Off, On and Reserve positions.

If you have a pingle it will flow without vac assist,

BTW always turn off a Pingle when the bike is off.

Oh and DONT START THE BIKE until you fix this, you're washing the walls of the cyl with gas and that's bad juju. Very very expensive to fix new pistons and cyl when you score up the walls.

i've had problems with needle valve seats on holly carbs on cars. you can look at it and it will appear normal, look like new, but still give you hell. in your case thats alot of gas!! does the bike run right? how would the crank case hold that much?? can a bike possibly flow that much gas?

with only 5k on the bike i assume it sits alot, and if the petcock was left on it wouldnt take but a day or two for the tank to empty into the crankcase. i have seen this numerous times. it will take a number of oilchanges to rid the oil system of the gas. not only are the cylinders and rings at danger, so are all the internal engine parts..................:)

i guess i someday need to tear an engine apart, because i'm at a total loss as to where 2 gals of fuel could fit into an engine thats already full of oil. somebody help me understand this, i'm missing something here:confused:

most of the oil is returned to the oil tank.........leaving the actual crankcase empty. these engines arnt llike an automobile, they are of a "dry sump" variety........................:)

I do not know. I put 2 gallons in the tank. opened the gas valve and started the bike. 2 ,minits maybe 3 no more with the bike running the gas was gone and the crank case was full of gas and oil. It ran ok. How can that much gas pour through the heads without flooding it out?

i would love to see this bike in action..............can ya take a vid of it doing this????? trying to figure out how ya can get 2 gal of gas through a 5/16 gas line in under 3 minutes, especially when it is reduced to nearly 1/8th at the petcock...........??????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
there is definatly something wrong with the plumbing on your tank or this picture..........................:)

I have not changed the pluming, and the bike has allways run good. If take the air filter off and open the gas valve, no gas pours into the heads. I did not look in the carb while it was running. But no, I'am not going to run it again untill I fix it. Ordered a shop manual yesterday.
