I finally got started working on the bike. Gonna replace the drive belt & pulleys, tranny seals, rear shocks, front fork springs, brake rotor & pads, clutch hub bearing, & maybe the flux capacitor while I got everything apart anyway. There's a few gaskets on the tranny that are seeping too. Decided not to powdercoat the frame yet, too much work this close to spring. This is a good time to look the whole bike over for any issues, & make it pretty for that first ride in the spring. Just waitin' on a couple boxes of parts from Jireh Cycles & American Legend M/C. I think I'll get the belt from H-D because the OEM units seem to last a long time. The old has 70,000 miles on it and doesn't show much wear, but I want to replace it anyway.
Anybody have suggestions on anything else I should check while it's apart?

It's got Timken bearings in the swing arm, so I planned on cleaning & repacking them when I do the drive belt. I'll check wheel bearings & front end bearings too. I think I want to use use braided stainless hose and/or hard stainless tubing for the oil & gas.

If you're going to change the flux capacitor, you might want to have a look at your brake lines too and maybe go stainless with them, your original lines,if still there could be getting tired. Hate to burst a brake line hauling her down from warp speed;)

Front brake line is braided stainless, replacing the rear one sounds like a good idea. Think I'll rebuild both master cylinders and powdercoat the handlebar controls too. Calipers were done last winter, primary chain is new, might have the spokes tightened up & the wheels trued while I'm at it. Thanks for the tips.

Had to take a couple weeks off from bike tinkerin' to take care of a few other things, but finally was able to get back to it. New stator, rear brake rotor, chrome drive pulley (free!), trans pulley, tranny seals & spacer, drive belt, powdercoated the swing arm, chrome axle adjusters ($11 H-D bargain bin!), repacked swing arm bearings, powdercoated the shock springs & covers, (whacked 3/4" off the stock springs with a chop saw). Got it back on the ground and rolled it outside to powerwash all the grime off (it finally got up to 37 degrees today!). Now I gotta take some of it back apart to rattle-can the frame & make things pretty. Gonna reroute some oil lines and move the oil filter back under the tranny where it belongs. Also want to pretty up the front end, but it'll have to wait til after the back half is done. I wish I woulda took more pictures along the way. I'll try to post more pics from now on.

Hey Wideglide85. New here and enjoying it. I'm wondering how difficult it was to disassemble and reassemble the shocks for coating. Any special tools?

I think it should be OK...had a bud that started powder coating in his shop a few years back...he powder coated a sheet of aluminum foil and would fold and bend it and there were no cracks or spider webs in the coating when he flattened it out again.

I hate to be a skeptic but that flux capacitor doesn't look new to me! Rest of the rebuild looks great why would you cheap out on the flux capacitor? You could have at least powder coated it!!

At the other shop where I used to work, we powdercoated car springs (purple!) for Speedway Motors, so I'm hopin' it works out over the chrome on mine.

Tire's a 140 Dunlop. I had a 150 Avon on it, but it just barely rubbed on the fender lip.

A piece of cake, if you have a spring compressor. This is the one I made out of scrap from our saw dept. A couple pieces of 1/2" aluminum, some 3/8" threaded rod, nuts, & flat washers, 2 different sizes of hole saw, and about 1/2 hour of free time. Any motorcycle supply place sells them too, but I'm a cheap skate.

I'd take powder coating over chrome any day...looks good...I think the pulley bolts would look good with a coat of black on them:)
