I like things simple and when I ride I pretty much venture off and stay off the highways and go where it looks interesting. I don't like loading my bike up with a radio, cell phones and at one time gps. Recently I got hooked on my Garmin Nuvi 200. I use it for work and have found many benefits and now I want to junk up my bike with it. What I find that I like is that you can get yourself lost then hit "home" and it will guide you back also when you run low on gas just press "fuel" and all the gas stations in the area show up. I looked into the Harley Catalog and the , no surprise, cost of a Harley mounted GPS $600 plus dollars. Sorry I have to figure on how to mount my cheap $125 GPS on my bike. Its not water proof but I just take it off if its raining or by 6 more if I have to. Any suggestion on mounts?

Bass Pro shop has a "generic" mount.....I got one for my bike....you get the parts....so one part holds the gps, then you get the backplate, the upright, and the handlebar mount in another kit....(if I recal right). Think I paid no more then 50$....... as for rain, bring along some sandwhich bags.....if it starts to rain you can throw one of those over it and keep it dry.

my thoughts.......a gps is something else to distract you while riding....shifting your eyes from the road to get a good look at the gps. that said, i think they are a good tool to have, as is a cell phone. i keep my cell in the bag and check it when i stop....if i were lucky enough to own a gps, i would also put it in the bag and check it when needed....whether lost or looking for gas, you would want to be stopped so ya dont go too far in the wrong direction!!!!:)

I carry a cell phone to because I'm self employed and usually check it when I stop for gas or food and have had to call a client back and have set appointments while on the road. But, I hate it and will be glad for the day when I no longer need it except for an emergency. Will never carry a GPS I personally think they should be banned on bikes. We have a guy in our HOG chapter who has one mounted to his bike and god he is always fiddling with the dam thing. God it drives you nuts especially when he is trying to adjust it while riding. :gah:

For the most part I agree with you. I have a phone for the same reason. Packed away until I pull over for gas or a break then I check it. A Friend of mine who I ride with every once in a while has a BMW with all the bells and whistles even has one of those air bag Jackets. To much IMO. I am border line with the GPS. Don't won't to be a slave to it but at times I think I can find more back roads with it. Many times I have gone down roads only to be a dead end. On long rides you can set it to avoid the highways which I like. Don't see why the GPS should be banned. If the person can't seem to take his/her eyes off it then maybe its not for that person but another law? I see a lot of Bikers that shouldn't even be on the road but I wouldn't blame the bike or the GPS.

    a cell

I do carry a cell. After being involved in a wreck with a car while I was on my bike and my passenger not surviving and my family thinking I was dead (for about ten minutes...ten minutes too long) I pretty much carry a phone. Once I got thru many many months of healing and physical therapy I was able to walk again, I got back on. My kid and his mom cried but gotta do what I felt the need to do. I let them call as many times as they want while I ride. I do not always awswer but I will open the phone up if I am riding and let 'em hear the bike and wind. They know I am ok...after a couple of years they have pretty much gotten thru it.
At first they called all the time. by the end of the first season I started calliing them all the time.. just to bother them. Ya know the kid has friends over and dad is on the phone.. again. BUt a GPS? naaahhhh .... I got a buddy that does not to ride much anymore (big businessman) He loves it when we take off and just go.It took his ol' lady a bit to figure it out. We get kinda somewhere out and about and next thing ya know you are a bit "lost" We'll stop for a beer but no directions. We knew we were Northeast of home and I had a dang map anyways. On long trips I bet it might be nice for road construction and information like detours? My phone has it, all I gotta do is call and say I am lost or whatever and they will get me back. Not gonna ever use it under normal circumstances. I have been all over this country and enjoy the thrill of going into my unknown and seeing if I can get there.
Kinda think it would take the thrill out of it for me.
Oh yeah I do known one putz that spends more time looking at the GPS than the road or the dang Poker run instructions themselves...LOL man that gets on my nerves. Come on we are twenty miles from home and ya gotta turn that thing on? Wow sounds like he needs more time on the seat wondering the roads than anything. GPS on a poker run? Can you say "RUB"

If you want to use one, use it like a map...only take it out when you are stopped and trying to figure out where to go next. If you are wanting to use it for the turn-by-turn directions, plug your headphones into it and stick it in your pocket. You can still hear where it is telling you to turn while keeping your eyes on the road. Ride safe.

To each their own I guess. I have been riding for over twenty years never wanted a wind shield, never had a phone until a few years ago, no stereo, Ipod, by law have to wear a helmet etc. Now a phone comes in handy like voodoo has said, I see some have the windshield, I bet some have a stereo, complete with all the luggage.....as far as being adventurous I feel this will open more doors to areas I didn't think existed....maybe

I picked up a Garmin with a head phone jack. I use it when I go into the big city and I do not know where I am going. A womens voice gives me turn by turn directions with the street names. It is almost like having my wife along accept when I make a wrong turn she says "re-calculating instead of" I told you so ".

I don't have a GPS but I wouldn't be opposed to have one in the bag just for getting occasional directions... when stopped. Same for my phone, I've always had one with me for business and emergency. However while riding I throw the phone in the bag since when I ride that is the only thing on my mind.

We're all different so what works for one biker wouldn't even cross the mind of another. I do agree though that those who ride and constantly fiddle with their BS gadgets drive me as crazy as soccer moms on cell phones.

Soccer moms on cell phones are simply dangerous, kind of like those that text messages while driving. Its all fun until it all comes crashing down when an accident occurs or they just hit a biker because they were not paying attention. :cussing: :gah: But officer I just didn't see the motorcycle.

IMHO Bikers playing with electronic toys while riding can be just as hazardous.

Never thought I'd like a windshield, then I got a Road King. Now I won't ride any distance without one. Never thought I needed a radio, then I got a Road Glide and now I also have XM so I won't loose the signal. Never wondered about GPS until my wife gave me a Garmin 760 for my birthday. I do a lot of solo riding on back roads 'cuz I don't like freeways. The GPS has been infalable and even when that women tells me she's recalculating because I don't like to follow her directions I haven't ever been able to get totally lost. Program it just like you're reading a map and then you don't have to play with it while you're riding. Advancements in technology is a good thing. Makes finding that next fuel stop a sure thing instead of hoping one will show up before the engine starts to sputter. ;)

or maybe.....ding "you have just passed a strip joint"......... the next Hooters is on your right in 6 blocks?:D
I have gotten used to a windshield for the long hauls on out of state trips, now I leave a small windshield on alot more often than taking it off anymore.

Because I am not retired. There comes a time when you have to get home. When I am retired and time is a thing of the past then thats a different story. By somewhat modernizing I hope to broaden the venture a bit without going down dead end roads find more some towns etc. Who knows I might toss the thing after trying it.

I do agree with all the down side of using the GPS but I do use one and it is great for my purposes. When you have a specific place to be at a specific time and you've never been there before, you can't beat it. I need to find staging areas for the PGR. Just enter the address and it takes me there. You do have to discipline yourself not to screw around with it when moving. For those that have no discipline, you can set the feature that disables the buttons when moving. It's not for everyone but they do come in handy at times. For a good selection of mounts try Ram.
