My question is can a hand held air pump such as the one's used on bicycles be used to air up the air shocks on my street glide.

I wouldn't use one. The reservoir for the air shock isn't that big. Depending upon the size of the pump you could put a lot of air into the shocks and they don't like too much air. I have the harley pump..it's small, fits into the tour pack..no fuss no muss..had it for over ten years. To answer your question you could hook up the pump to the shock air valve. I would be very very gentle with pumping. If the pump has a built in guage, see where you're at before you stroke the pump and gently move the plunger in an inch or two..again depending upon the swept volume of your pump..bigger it is the less you move the handle..it won't take much.

yes they can be used, but the results are very poor at best. get a pump from harley or one like it from the aftermarket. the money will be well spent........
