Buell to Build Off-Road Competition Motorcycles Within Two Years

EAST TROY, WI (March 9, 2007) – Buell Motorcycle Company recently announced its intent to bring an off-road motorcycle to market, specifically designed for closed-course competition.

“We’ve told our dealers about our plans to bring an off-road, closed-course competition motorcycle to market within the next two years,” said Chairman and Chief Technical Officer Erik Buell. “This will allow Buell dealers the time needed to make plans to meet the needs of this new market and customer.”

“Harley-Davidson and Buell are highly committed to broadening the range of products we offer and reaching out to new groups of customers,” said Buell President and Chief Operating Officer Jon Flickinger. “We’re always looking at new market opportunities, but this one is particularly exciting.”

Good for them, I hope it goes well. When we were kids my neighbor had an HD 90, sortof an on/off road bike. I haven't seen one of those in forever.

That'd be an Aermacchi built bike ( http://www.cybermotorcycle.com/euro/brands/aermacchi.htm ), HD bought out the Italian factory back then. I used to have the hots for a 125 Rapido. :D These things are supposed to run Rotax engines. I doubt seriously they'll be competitive with the Japanese and Euro stuff on the tracks, but it'll give HD something for the TTs in grand national racing. At the Peoria TT every year, they show up with their short track bike, old school suspension, Rotax bikes and get their butts handed to 'em. I felt real sorry for Chris Carr there when he was riding the short track bike, riding his butt off in vein.

What I'm looking for is if they spin off a DP/dual sport line, something I could motard, out of the dirt bikes. Heck, they might even come out with a factory Motard. Something to compete with these....
