I would look for general condition of bike. Look to see if the tires are cracked, not sure if it has spokes or mags, but if it has spokes, check to see if they are tight. I am assuming that, but not sure if it is a 4 speed. Ask. I would pull the stick out of the oil bag to see if there is dirty oil in it or not. For me, this is an indication of how the bike has been taken care of. Are there any signs that the bike has been stored outside. Check covers for salt corrosion, rust. Are there any gauges in weird places that might indicate that there has been some performance work done. Look for leaking gaskets at the base, heads, rockers and primary. ECT. :D

If the rear turn signals have been relocated to the back of the strut to make room for saddlebags. Check inside the fender where the turn signal post is bolted thru as the fender can crack there as the washer with the kit was a little small. Long story short. I had a 89 883. moved the turn signals back with the kit and it wasn't long before the fender cracked there. [I did ride the bike a little hard though]
