I just purchased a new harley 3/4 face helmet. Sometimes it is nice not to have the wind blowing in your face. I noticed that the exhaust sounds muddy and is actually noisier than with the half helmet. If I ride any distance at all I will use earplugs. Is there anything else that I can do? I think that noise is amplified from the motor. The exhaust sounds great with the half helmet and isn't really that loud. Any info will help. Seems with a harley you do one things that leads to about ten more to fix the problem.

Are you sure the 3/4 helmet is not blocking the wind noice and making it seem the motor is amplified?

I'm waiting on a clearview shield that is taller with an upper recurve. Will get that installed and then see how the helmet works. I've tried three different shields and none seem to work. Hope this new one works.

I wear a 3/4 helmet also it does reduce the wind noise and the exhaust tone that you hear but it seem to amp all the other whir tics and other mech noise that is normal. also found that the taller the windshield the more mech noise you will hear as it reflects it right in your face.

I know with me the half helmet lets a lot of wind noise and I don`t hear the motor as much....I almost always wear the 3/4 and I seem to hear the motor more....I don`t wear a face shield except when it is raining...

Wind noise is one of the worst things for your ears, yeah I ride without ear protection but it's my right to do it until its legislated otherwise!

Buddy had some custom made earplugs at daytona bikeweek, said they are good, they drill small holes to let in some sound (otherwise we have to hear his music choice at full blast)

Cutting off wind noise will aid in reducing fatigue I've been thinking of a full face for the longer rides to cut down on wind fatigue and if it's cold or raining you get a plus as well.

The Helmet Shop in Daytona Beach says they will beat all advertised prices,
Might be a trip for me to get one...

I put a windshield that comes up to around eye level on my 2005 FatBoy & wear a fullface Shoei. Been riding about 23 years now & starting hearing info on wind noise causing hearing problems. I picked my last 2 helmets based partially on how did on noise testing by bike mags. In town I just wear the helmet, but out on the highways (where I prefer to be) I wear regular ear plugs that I get for shooting at the range.

I have noticed similar ear plugs by the cash registers at cycle dealerships occasionally.

My 3/4 HD helmet keeps noise down when I compare it to my 1/2 helmet. The cover over the ears mellows my mid-loud pipes. Sometimes certain frequencies just carry further, like a gravelly voice in a crowd. Wish I didn't keep losing my damned ear plugs, they help with the 1/2 helmet.
