Help Me Pleeze

hey hows every1 i just bought a 80 sporty rolling chassis with everything except engine and tranny and i mean everything my freind has a 83 1340 engine and trany he can sell me for dirt cheap can i make this fit in my bike and what will it take???????????????????????pleeze help i wana ride

You have a Big Twin engine and tranny and a Sporty chassis, not bein a smartazz but the only way to fit the engine in I can think of is get a Big Twin frame, then you can take the parts off the Sporty chassis(front end ,wheels and brakes,tank ,oil bag) pick up a BT primary drive to hook the engine and tranny together and make yerself a FX custom shovel. Willie G did it in '71 but don't use the same azz end he did.:gah:

Not even worth thinking about. The Sportster's unit construction engine/transmission is a structural member of the frame (until 2004) & the final drive is on the right. A BT uses a separate transmission & the final drive is on the left. The Sportster frame would have to be extensively modified & if you're not an engineer I wouldn't recommend it. Oh, it could be done, but you'd spend so much time & money it'd be ridiculous & the bike most assuredly wouldn't ride like a Sportster.

Also, the '80 model you have is an "Ironhead" which is different from the Evo Sportsters that 1st came out in 1986 & newer Sportster/Buell engines are not a bolt-in, although they could be made to fit with a LOT less work. But Ironhead parts are still available & there's a Yahoo group called the Ironhead Sportster Garage you might want to check out. Of course they'd tell you it's blasphemy to even think about putting a BT engine in an Ironhead Sportster frame, but as a practical matter it don't make sense anyway.

And with respect to the original post, if it was me I'd say I just got me an Ironhead !! I'd love to have one for a project & at one time, the "cool" guys rode Ironheads. They're still considered an all-time classic & tuned right they'll scoot right along too.

I really like my iron head.It does scoot right along...I have gotten alot of compliments on my bike and try to make it run alittle better every year...

thanks everyone just figured idt be worth a try got a free 1340 and tranny dont realy like the top speed on a 4 speed or a ironhead engine kinda a big engine guy i guese ill just try to sell the sporty chassis and get a big twin frame and chassis to put the engine in again thanks alot!!!!!!

Top speed is the same with a 4-speed or a 5-speed 'cause high gear is the same 1:1 ratio.

And for FWIW, I know of several Ironheads that are faster than most people would want to go, including one that topped 153 mph naked (no fairing). That one did have the silly gas though .....

Just saw a Panhead on a Softail frame... Looked really nice... Lot's of frabricating to get that bad boy together...

well if you try and need a new frame I got a 03, but your better off just searching around, if you have the rollin chassie you'll need a sporty engine. unless you do heavy modifications, just switching to a hard tail frame on a sporty is heavy modification. I would buy the bt and start from scratch unless you want to build a sporty.
