Swap the coil for another one and then try it - If that don't work start back trackin the wiring to the sw. and the battery.:)
    And welcome to BFT:D

You say new power at coil
do you mean a new coil?

Do you have a Multi Meter?

Best to check for power coming to the coil from the bike, if you are getting
power there then the coil should fire, if not you may have a bad coil

Check connections and grounds working back from the coil to the battery.

I don't know about the manuals written in 1979, but my manual from 1998 has some real good troubleshooting steps for these kinds or problems.

Look in your manual and see if it has a trouble shooting section. Don't get upset... count to 10... breath deep...... and take your time and read your the manual.

If you don't have a trouble shooting section let me know and I will photograph some pages from my manual for you.

ok can you get a friend with a meter to come over?
if not you can get a cheap analog at harbor freight for a few
bucks, at min a test light from HF, or Home Depot, Ace will help you
    pinpoint where the problem lies..

DO you know anyone with a good coil?
