Hick up on CV carb HELP

    alright guys, I went through and put the CV kit in off halrey performance. I went with jetting that it had recommend. The plugs have been almost like a powder black not oily....I git the hick up on low end like it when it was running lean...air fuel mix, I have adjusted and adjusted from 1 3/4 to a setting of 2 1/2 2 3/4 witch is where its at now...set up arlen ness big sucker with flush cover vance hines long shots, 1450cc


    about to give up and take it to the harley dealer and dyno tune! HELP!!!

    have you tested for intake leaks? try setting the screw at 3 turns out also.....

    Explain when the hick up occurs, does it happen from an idle as you roll it on or does it only happen when you hammer it? What RPM. What jets do you have in it? Like Chucktx said check for air leaks.

    Seems to me you're a little rich on the low end. The V&H long shots altho they look cool don't really scavenge well in low RPM's. You're getting more air in with the big sucker but kinda creating a bottleneck with the exhaust, try dropping a size on the pilot jet, maybe a 45 pilot and see if that helps any.

    I have nver checked for air leaks, and for a free set of pipes I couldnt pass it up, my dad has a 102 hp heritage with a 2 into 1 rhinehart instead of the long shots.....umm the bike hick up at low rpm like leaving a stop sighn or pulling up. i pull in on the clutch give it some gas..i thought maybe i had my idel to low...sounds like the idel where it needs to be...i thought 3 turns would be to much if im arleady rich

    where do i start checking for air leaks at?

    Take a can of Carb cleaner and spray it around the seal on the carb to intake manifold area, if you have a leak the idle will pick up. When I install a carb I always use a light coat of grease in the rubber boot so the carb will slide right in and you can twist as needed to fit with the cleaner backing plate without tearing anything. It also helps to seal it on first start up. Like Lucifer said try dropping the pilot jet a size, 45 should be real close, 3 turns is ok, Give us a little more info on the bike, year model what all is done to the motor, etc. Do you have baffles in the pipes, you really need them in for back pressure.

    well the bike is a 2006 softail standard with stage 1 arlen ness big sucker and back up plate ..running the flush mount cover where all the filter is exposed, vance hines long shots with baffles, I orderd the kit with the new emulsion tube, slide spring..drilled the hole to 7/64 running 48 idle and a 195..thats what the paper said to go with i also put a easy just air/fuel mix screw....tried the carb cleaner no affect when i did the carb i checked the diaphram on the slide...no holes the bike had never had any carb work and had a junk 2 into 1 that some cut half off!!!! it could have been a nice pipe other then that motor is stock, the bike was a auction bike out of atlanta GA I put alot of time and money into itcame off the trailer with a flat rear tire had 11000 miles on the bike i think someone just rode it and didnt take care of it

    When you say you drilled the hole to 7/64, does that mean you drilled the hole in the slide? I think CV Performance was talking about using a 7/64 bit to drill the filler material out of the mixture screw adjustment tower. What’s your altitude? :banghead::banghead:
    With 11,000 miles your bike is barley broke in.

    drilling the slide is a bad thing to do. it allows the slide to flutter, it will never find the correct position to run in. do you have another slide to put in?????

    ah man why did it tell me to drill it for then? to git one from the harley dealer i think its 45 bucks i just checked few days ago because i thought about replacing the rubber where should i go for one, and where would you spend your next buck for performance ..thinking dome top pistons..head work ..cam not going big bore

    what kit did you put in???? kens kit does not call for drilling the slide. there is a bit to clean the slide hole, but not for enlarging it. some "other" kits call for drilling the slide. it was the thought of a bigger hole would allow the slide to work quicker. come to find out all it did was let the slide flutter, and the carb could not be tuned. you might contact kenfuzed and see if he has a good used one to sell......pm him. good luck and let us know........

    Drilling the slide 1/8" makes the hole too big, you should be OK with 7/64" reuse the stock spring ,don't shorten it or use a lighter one either

    I’d do like chucktx suggested get a new (different slide not drilled) and see what happens. I wouldn’t do any motor work until I get this bug worked out and the bike running good. If your not going big bore I wouldn’t raise the compression and even then I wouldn’t raise the compression to more than 10:1. The stock heads flow pretty good maybe a little clean up would be good. I changed cams that made a big difference. There is lots of controversy weather to go gear driven cams or the new H-D tension. Also you’ll find lots of options and opinions of what brand and type of cam to use. If you don’t do the work yourself find a good mechanic that you trust and talk to them, I would get a bolt in cam. I would also suggest a good ignition. With a carb you don’t have to worry about all the things that an EFI has to. With an ignition you can adjust your timing and rev limiter.
    What you do all depends on what you want out of your bike.

    I believe when he said he drilled the slide it was with the 7/64" bit that comes with the kit to clean the hole out, he just said drilled instead of cleaned.A 1/8"hole in the slide with a shorter and lighter spring will cause "hunting", put a stock spring back in with the 1/8"hole and it can stop the surging effect, there won't be any adverse effects on slide performance with a 7/64" hole in it, he can try the lighter spring but I'd stay with stock.
    I also see Ken sells a 46 pilot jet you might want to go with that instead of the 48. My guess is a 45 or 46 pilot should get it running pretty good

    hey hey see i thought i was running a bit rich..but gitting lean side affects ex the hick up..right now i got the spring in that came with the kit i got ahold of a guy that dose carbs hes on ebay and has a web site takes the carbs completly rebuilds them for 140 145 with "worked" slides like 33 grams i think anyway im just wanting the slide he said 65 bucks

    and what shoudl i look for ignition and cam ..i know nothing about either for this bike! screamin eagle tuner?

    Hey guys, sorry I missed this and didn't chime in earlier.

    The 7/64 bit is included for 2 things, to help drill out the plug covering the original mixture screw and to clean up the vacuum port hole in the slide. As mentioned earlier using a 1/8 bit is too large and allows the slide to hunt.

    I would suggest starting with a clean set of plugs before trying any tuning. Start out with the smallest of the 2 included main jets, the 46 pilot, and then tune from there.

    The reworked carbs on ebay you mentioned I believe are the ones that Wally (barber883) has been doing for years.., almost as long as I have. :D
    I used to build very similar carbs but couldn't keep up with the demand so decided to concentrate supplying the same parts (and know-how) for others to fix up their own. His reworked carb is very good but you should be able to get the same performance with the kit you already have and the advice here.

    The 7/64 can be used for both. I don't want to confuse "drill out" with "clean up". Using the 7/64 bit on the vacuum port hole in the slide really doesn't drill out much but actually cleans up that hole which is often misshaped or has burs inside. As long as you don't let the bit wander you won't be making the hole that much larger. Using a 1/8 or larger on the other hand will greatly enlarge that hole allowing the slide to rise/drop too fast.

    BTW, the amount of break-in miles or altitude should not be an issue. I have tuned carburetors on bikes with 10 miles on them (long enough to get home from the dealer) and with 100,000 miles. CV carbs are not as prone to the effects of altitude due to their vacuum slide's ability to self regulate. In the past I built some of these carburetors for use on ultralite small airplanes with great success in flying in high altitude mountain regions without having to constantly adjust mixture.

    Starting with the core settings described and moving up from there is the key to successfully setting up the CV carburetor. Getting ahead of yourself by installing larger jets will only result in attempting to tune back down to find the correct settings.

    I kept the bit straight, the hole should be fine. I went with the jets that the kit recom. and like i said that was a 48 idle and 195 but im litterally jumping off here and going out installing the 46....but....its been raining here for 2 days and another 2 in the forecast so I might not know anything and I have 1 more set of plugs im going to drop in with the jet thanks guys and I still think I want a slide from that guy how can i shave weight off mine dremmel ?
