Did this upgrade on my RG,

True HID H4 Phillips bulbs, ballasts etc

Simple to install uses exisiting harness, you plug in the HID jumper harness, then run one wire to a ground the other to switched power for the ballest, I used a simple jumper clip so no splice and dice.

First is in garage no flash
    Second, with flash
Third over the windshield - blurry but without flash it has to open the exposure a bit more ...

I have been contemplating updating my lights also, a couple of questions
    1. How do these stand up to vibration, my old fxrs I bet I burnt out 5 or 6 silverstar bulbs before I replaced it back to OEM.
    2. Where did you get them?
    3. How much do they cost?
    4. Is it a huge difference?
    5. Where did you mount your ballast and how big is it (will it fit in the nacelle of a road king)?
    6. Is there an amp draw difference, do I have to worry about getting the connectors hot and melting?
Thanks sorry for all the questions, Todd

HID bulbs use Xenon gas and the light is created by sending large power to the bulb and causing the gas to react, there is no filiment to break.

From Steve at HID Kits | XenonDepot HID conversion Kits | Xtreme Xenon Light Kit| Projector Halo Headlamp | LED Tail Lights | Xenon Bulbs and ballasts, there is a motorcycle section, HD's use H4 bulbs, and you should get 4300K, 4300K is closest to pure white so you get the best light.

Depends on what you select, the 4300K Bi Xenon is high/low combined so you have both beams $239, but use the code CL and you get $25 off that price

If you get the low beam only kit, which is what I did, $180 less the $25,

I have to say it.... Night and day.. he he he he, yes on low beam I have more light than my halogen HD 09 super bulbs had on high...

The ballast is approx 2x2x2 square, its under my faring. The motorcycle kits come with a 6 foot long wire from the ballast connector to the front, so you can hide it under a side panel or in the frame in front of the battery on an fl, wire to switched power there and run it up under the tank, nothing would be under the nacelle but the new wire.

Other than hooking the ballast power wire it's all plug and play, I simply used a jumper clip to hook the ballast to the power (Orange and white) wire on the harness, no cutting, it's simple a cave man could do it.

Less, the ballast does all the work, it draws less power than a 50w bulb, they run cooler, no filament and last longer.

    No problem, glad to help.

FWIW, I am upgrading to the Bi/Xenon simply because I want a High beam to flash if needed. The low beam kit is plenty of light but I have two 5 inch bulbs.

I know $200 bucks for lights, well, I figure at night, what I can't see can do me damage, and I'd rather see as far as I can and during the day, well it's sure easy to see these lights.

Thanks HRK, I aprreciate it, I am going to check into these, I agree 200 is a lot of money but if it saves you a wreck its worth it, thanks Todd

I just looked throught this website and have another question, If you get the cheaper kit, the one with just the low beam, how does the high beam work, I realize if you get the bi xenon kit you get both beams HID but what happens to the high beam when you just get the low kit. Does the bulb have a filament for the high beam? Thanks Todd

If you get the low only you have no high beam so you flick it on high and it goes dark as there isnt any high element on the low only kit.

I did the low only, it's very bright, however I decided I wanted a high bulb as well and have ordered the upgrade to hi/lo bi/xenon anyway.

BTW the difference in Hi and low on HID is less than the difference in a halogen, that is because the low HID is so much more effective than a low beam halogen,

You see more difference between high and low beam in a halogen because the low is not as good as HID low...

Now if you have the HD Dual bulb housing as you see below you run the H11 single low kit, and put in a Xenon Gas h8 for High which you can get at Xenon Depot as well.

If ya shop hard enough you will be able to find an automotive kit to work for your scoot. I actually took an HID of a damaged mustang headlamp and adapted it to my fatboy. But if ya go to ebay, they have thausands of kits, and pretty reasonable. In fact one kit can do two bikes in most cases. All it takes is a little improvising and it will work. They even have kits with mini ballast, the size of a credit card... Check it out...

Make sure you're getting phillips bulbs and quality stuff,
there is a lot of tiawanesesese crap out there

I put the low-hi lamp on, all it really does is give you light on high, very little improvement over low.

Now having said that, the difference as explained by Xenon depot would be very small because the low beams do all the work and are brighter than stock halogen low beams so the difference isn't that great.

Unless you have to have a high beam, the low beam 4300K phillips kit puts out more than enough light.

Your right HRK the one beam is sufficient. The one I installed on my fatboy only has one beam. And that sucker is very bright. Is funny though, I took that from an 08 mustang. This thing actually had an actuator that would move back and forward for the high and low beam. I couldn't adopt that inside the capsule..

I installed a kit in both my bike and truck from this place:
    efxworldwidesales.
Not a cheapo-asian knock off and easy to install. I went with a 6000K bulb on the harley and 8000K on my truck since Dodge Rams have such poor optics in the headlights. Higher the Kelvin (K) the whiter the light, though above 8000K starts looking real blue.

    Hey Todd:

I do know that hid has a higher inrush current but a lower operating current. There are kits out that allow you to plug into the headlight connector instead of going to the battery. I work with hid lights quite often as an electrician. They require a high pulsed voltage to strike an arc in the arc tube. Hid bulbs don't have an element. They have an arc tube filled with gas (not sure on gas type) and a very small amount of mercury. Some I have worked on operate @120v to 350v on the secondary side. I'm not sure the operating voltage on the cycle lights. I've been tossing around doing and upgrade to my street glide. Hope this helps a little.

I called Steve today and talked about my options, I am thinking about going with Harley 2 bulb setup as seen in HRKs post I will have to see what I can get the headlight housing from Zanottis for, correct me if I am wrong but if I go with the dual bulb setup I have a regular halogen bulb on the low but an HID on high or do you run both lights on high, Todd

The low bead halogen runs all the time. The hid comes on when you go to high beam. I looked this up on the HD website.

That is backwards from the way I think I would want it, I would want the HID on low because that is where it is at most of the time and use the Halogen high to get a more aimed beam instead of a wide pattern like low

    you get both

Now to hook it up you'll have to play around with the connections because the HID setup will take over the three prong HD setting so you have to connect a wire to the ground and high beam fee wires to the hd connector and jump over to the old (new) second high bulb in the hd housing.

the other way is to get a car H11 system, the HD bulb from zanottis can take both H11's so you will have two active and that's a bunch more than high low, you will really light it up.

What doe the HID kit from harley have for bulbs, If I pay 200 from Steve for his kit and then 140 for the dual halogen kit from Zanottis, that is 340 which is getting close to the cost I can get the whole HID kit made especially for my bike for 431 from Zanottis, I dont know just a thought just wandering if anyone has any experience with the Harley HID

Its similar, however if it were me, I'd buy the high low beam h4 bulb single unit for $250 and skip the HD kit if you want both high and low.

I can tell you from having the high, low it's not that big a difference between high and low, you get a little more light down the center of the road, but you get 90+% from the low beam that is still on..

If you are going dual bulb HD then yes you might get the HD kit, or opt for Kuryakyns HID kit, from what I hear the Kuryakyn is superior to the HD kit. and it is similar to the H4 Kit on the site I sent you but you get a special kuryakyn reflector and it takes up a butt load of room because of the design.

The Xenon Depot bike kits have 6 foot wires from the ballast to the bulb, so you don't have to cram everything in the light housing. JMO better stuff.

Again I'd stick with your current reflector and get the Bi/Xenon kit in H4 at 4300K and put the money in your pocket.
