The muffler insert is a baffle designed to reduce noise and increase back pressure. The tuning core is designed to add a little back pressure to help get around any reversion problems.

The core insertion tool is needed.

And you always have the ear-plugs option. I wear ear-plugs on any trip over ten miles. (I know a few HEARING-IMPAIRED bikers)

    Hooker step tuned exhaust

These are great performing pipes but known to be loud. Another option is to try one of the baffle replacements that Big City Thunder offers. They are supposed to give you more sound than stock and less than straight. At the same time they are supposed to retain or improve performance compaired to a straight pipe. I don't know anyone that has tried them yet but I'm interested. Check www.bigcitythunder.com for info.

    Hooker Stepped Tuned Exhaust

I have Hooker stepped tuned exhaust also. They are the short slashers for my softail deuce. They are very very loud; I wanted loud, but not this loud. Also some midrange torque has been lost. Hooker recommended that I install the slash cut baffle to cut down on the loudness and increase the back pressure that is needed. Other than that, the overall performance and style is great.
